How you can stay in the ‘holiday home’ made famous in classic Aussie movie The Castle

An enterprising Airbnb host has created a unique tribute to the film The Castle by turning the ‘holiday home’ used in the movie into a getaway destination.

Located in Bonnie Doon, 168kms from Melbourne, the modest three-bedroom cottage has been renovated to look just as it did in the 1997 film.

Highlights include retro furniture and fittings that recall the ’70s throwback atmosphere in the now famous Australian comedy classic.

Fans will recall that it was in Bonnie Doon where the films main characters – a family called the Kerrigan’s – enjoyed a bush holiday because they wanted to experience ‘the serenity’.

Interviewed by the Herald Sun on Monday, the current owner, known as Mel, said she bought the property in 2015.

She then spent eight months fitting out it in a style that followers of the film would appreciate including a kennel for the Kerrigan’s ‘dog’ Coco.

Its now available to sleep six guests for a minimum of $120 a night.

‘I thought, ”What would the Kerrigan family have in their holiday home” and I let the ‘Sal’ (portrayed in the film by Anne Tenney) in [side] me out,’ she said.

‘One thing to add is most furniture I purchased was second hand.’

The cosy getaway has many other references to the original film including a sign on the front lawn that spells out ‘Serenity’.

There’s also a set of jousting sticks prominently displayed in the front of the home – another reference to the film.

According to the AirBnB website the property also features a granny flat that sleeps 3 guests and its called ‘The Poolroom’ – another nod one of the of the films famous catchphrases.

Originally released in 1997 The Castle is a comedy about a blue collar family who do battle with developers.

Starring Michael Caton, Anne Tenney, Stephen Curry, Sophie Lee, Eric Bana and Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell, the ultra-low budget film went on to gross $11million at the Australian box office.

The films creators Rob Sitch, Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner, and Jane Kennedy later made another comedy classic The Dish in 2000.
