HSC rankings 2019 revealed: James Ruse is number one for the 24th consecutive year – so where did your school finish?

  • The Conservatorium High School came second with its best result in 10 years
  • Girls schools gained better results than they did in last year’s HSC

A top selective school has taken out the number one spot for the 24th consecutive year in the 2019 New South Wales Higher School Certificate. 

James Ruse Agricultural High School in Sydney’s north-west was the best performing school in this year’s HSC.

It also had 36 students achieving one of the highly-coveted top places in a course.

4. Sydney Grammar School

5. Hornsby Girls High School

6. Sydney Girls High School

7. North Sydney Girls High School

8. Reddam House

9. Baulkham Hills High School

10. Sydney Boys High School

The Conservatorium High School in Sydney city gained second place with its best result in more than ten years, closely followed by North Sydney Boys High in third place and Sydney Grammar in fourth, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Nine schools out of the top ten were selective and eight were public.

Private school Reddam House, in eighth place, was the only school to gain a position in the top ten that doesn’t assess students upon entry.

Willoughby Girls High, in 67th place, was the top non-selective public school.

Brigidine College in Randwick was the top performing Catholic school.

James Ruse principal Rachel Powell told the publication she was proud of the students and staff.

‘The students and the staff work incredibly hard here to achieve these results,’ she said. ‘It’s an outstanding place to be. Not just academically, but the amount of extra curricular and co-curricular activities that go on here is unbelievable. 

‘Our wellbeing team worked incredibly hard to make sure the students were well supported through this stressful time.’

According to the Daily Telegraph, girls schools gained better results than last year.

St Vincent’s College in Potts Point jumped 11 per cent from rank 130 to 59 and was the most improved school.

9. Northern Beaches Secondary College Mackellar Girls, rank 91

10. Strathfield Girls High school, rank 96

Hornsby Girls also bounced from eighth place to fifth and Loreto Killibiri moved from 39 to 18.

Some private schools with high fees dropped rankings.

SCEGGS Redlands fell from 75th place to 211.

The Kings’ School moved down from 41 to 62, Newington moved from 98 to 176 and Shore Grammar moved from 22 to 37.
