Huawei reveals its Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro smartphones

After months of anticipation, Huawei has finally unveiled its Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro smartphones to take on Apple and Samsung.

The smartphones feature almost edgeless displays, as well as the world’s first mobile artificial intelligence processing chipset.

The chipset means that instead of relying on AI in the cloud, the smartphone has its own sensing abilities within the device.

The Mate 10 costs €699 (£620/$825) and will be available in late October, while the Mate 10 Pro costs €799 (£710/$943) and be available in mid-November.

AI CAPABILITIES

The Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro come with Kirin 970 chipsets with AI processing capabilities.

The chipset means that instead of relying on AI in the cloud, the smartphone has its own sensing abilities within the device.

As well as giving the smartphone AI capabilities, the Kirin 970 chip also gives the Mate 10 50 per cent longer battery life.

This marks the first time a Neural Processing Unit has been used in a smartphone.

The two new smartphones were revealed today by Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, at an event in Munich.

The Mate 10 has a 5.9 inch RGBW HDR display, with 30 per cent better brightness.

It has an almost edgeless screen, with a screen-to-body ratio of 81.79 per cent.

Mr Yu said: ‘The new iPhone is amazing and has a screen-to-body ratio of 81 per cent. But the Huawei Mate 10 goes even further than that, and has a ratio of 81.79 per cent.’

Meanwhile, the Mate 10 Pro has a six-inch full OLED HDR display, with 70,000:1 high contrast.

Both smartphones are both water and dust resistant and have super-fast charging.

Just 30 minutes of charging will provide 58 per cent battery – 50 per cent faster than the iPhone 8 Plus.

One of the most innovative features is the AI capabilities of both the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.

The Kirin 970 chipset has 50 per cent better energy efficiency and 25 per cent better performance. The chip is 20 times faster than competition, including iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8
