Huge blaze breaks out at former school in Teeside

A huge fire has broken out at a former school with 15 fire engines tackling the flames and residents told to keep their windows and doors shut. 

Firefighters were called to the former Eston Park Academy in Teesside at 7.15pm are fighting the inferno of three hoses and a hydraulic platform. 

Surrounding roads have been shut and members of the public have been advised to avoid the area.

Initial enquiries suggest no one was inside the building at the time and it is not yet clear how the fire started.   

Hannah Griffiths, 20, and Kelsey Nettleton, 21, attended the school before leaving in 2013. 

Miss Griffiths told Gazette Live: “It’s sad. You make so many memories in school. I know it was going to get knocked down but it is awful to see it go like this.”

Her friend agreed adding: “It has been derelict for a long time. When I drive past the windows have all been broken and the curtains flapping in the wind.

A Cleveland Fire Service spokesman said: ‘We are currently attending a large fire at Eston Park Academy, on Burns Road in Eston.

‘Our firefighters will be at the incident throughout the night.

‘To ensure your safety we ask that you stay clear of the area! For your own safety please stay clear of the Burns Road area of Eston!’
