A fiery explosion at an electricity substation left thousands of homes without power last night.
Witnesses reported hearing ‘two loud bangs’ and then a ‘long stream of fire’ after a power surge at the site in Saltburn, North Yorkshire, at around 7pm.
Power was cut to 25,000 homes in the town as well as nearby Redcar and Hartlepool before being returned at around midnight.

Witness Johanna Parks told the Northern Echo: ‘There seemed to be two loud bangs, then loads of smoke billowing.
‘There was lots of bursts of flames at first, then a long stream of fire.
Cleveland Fire Brigade said: ‘Following a power surge, there was an explosion in an electrical box.
‘We are in attendance and have sent one appliance to the scene, but I would not describe it as a major fire.’
