Huge fire breaks out in $18 million Sydney pub bought only one year ago – as roof collapses and firefighters desperately try to battle the blaze

Flames have engulfed an $18 million Sydney pub which was bought only one year ago.

The fire broke out at the General Gordon Hotel on Railway Parade in Sydenham, Sydney’s inner-west, about 1.15pm on Monday. 

Photos show smoke billowing from the building as fire crews work to control it.

Gleeson Avenue and Burrows Avenue were both shut down to motorists on Monday afternoon. 

Trains were also prevented from stopping at Sydenham station due to the hazardous conditions. 

Buildings neighbouring the pub have also been evacuated while fire crews work to bring the blaze under control.
