An Australian woman’s unusual kitchen find baffled hundreds online until clever users shed light on what the mysterious object is used for.
Lisa Lou posted images of the gadget she found in a tuck shop to popular Facebook group, I Love to Op Shop, and drew in dozens of responses from confused members but some finally identified it as an egg topper.
An egg topper is used to take the top of the shell off a hard or soft boiled egg with ease to save your fingers from burning and from bits of shells getting inside.

‘Does anyone know what this is, please?’ she asked the group in the post.
Guesses ranged from a cocktail muddler, a vintage baby rattle to more X-rated objects.
‘Gosh. I don’t think I want to know,’ one joked.
‘It looks like something you buy at an adult shop,’ said another.
Finally, the puzzling appliance’s purpose was revealed as an egg topper by a few knowledgeable members.

‘It is a silly item. You can put one end over an egg and push it down to pierce a hole in the eggshell,’ one person explained.
‘You put it on your boiled egg and pull the top and it creates a perfect cut/open in the egg, then you can dip your toast in the runny yolk,’ said another.
Once it’s identity was revealed some were still confused as to how it would work.
An egg topper, features a spring mechanism that causes vibration helps the sharp edge of the dome cut the top portion of the shell without damaging the interior.
The spring is activated by pulling up the ball handle and the top and releasing.
