Hundreds of A-level students furious after a French exam included ‘impossible to answer’ question

A level students were left bewildered during a French exam after an exam board added an ‘impossible to answer’ question when they made a mistake creating the paper.

Eduqas has admitted there was an error in a French A level exam taken by more than 800 students.

Parents and students called for an ‘immediate review’ and answers over how the paper will be graded after an error was spotted in the listening section.

Pupils were asked to give an answer based on a specific recording, however, the answer to the question was not in it.

In fact, the teenagers say the answer was in another recording extract.

Confused and nervous many were left unsure how to answer at all.

One student said: ‘Half of the skills we needed to pass apparently was to guess what the producers of the exam were thinking while writing it… They were probably thinking of baguettes. Disappointed but not surprised.’

Another added on Twitter: ‘French A level exam totally messed up. 2 years of hard work put at risk because exam board messed up questions 3&4 urghhh!!’

Edqas, is part of the WJEC (formerly Welsh Joint Education Committee) board, admitted an error had occurred in yesterday’s exam.

A spokesperson of the company behind reformed GCSE and A Level examinations said: ‘We can confirm that there was an issue with the recording on yesterday’s examination and how it related to the rubric on one question, which may have impacted some students.

‘We have contacted centres to inform them that a special consideration application can be made on behalf of those candidates.

‘Our examiners and the awarding committee members will be made aware of the situation.

‘Candidate responses will be considered carefully during the marking and awarding processes to ensure that no candidate is disadvantaged.’

But angry social media users said the response did not go far enough and demanded further clarity on what will happen with the papers – since some anxious teenagers still have tests to come.

Another person added: ‘Completely agree that urgent response required, as well as an immediate review of procedures. Must be horrendous for those young people whose university places and future careers could have been put in jeopardy!’
