Hundreds of cheeky cyclists bare all as they take part in the World Naked Bike Ride around London

Hundreds bared all yesterday as they cycled through London naked in an attempt to promote cycle safety.

The annual World Naked Bike Ride event, now in its 12th year, sees a swathe of people strip off for a ride to raise awareness of the ‘vulnerabilities’ of cyclists.

Showing strength in numbers, hundreds took part in the ride which kicked off at six different spots: Tower Hill, Regents Park, West Norwood, Hyde Park, Clapham Junction and Kew Bridge.

Many brave riders took part on the public ‘Boris Bikes’ while others brought their own.

Participants in London had the choice of shorter, more leisurely rides, or longer, more taxing ones.

But all the routes eventually came together from Westminster Bridge to Hyde Park as the sea of pink flesh flooded across the Thames.

At the same time 300 riders made their around Manchester City Centre.

The gaggle then made their way down busy Oxford Road towards the town hall.

Some commuters and evening drinkers in the city centre were left open-mouthed as the huge convoy of flesh-flashing riders sounding horns snaked their way through the streets.

Organisers said getting themselves seen was a key part of its aim.

Andrew Fisher, 40, said: ‘It’s about getting people on bikes noticed.

‘Even when we are fully clothed we are naked to the danger of motorists on the road.’

He added that the roads were ‘built for bikes’ but had become ‘overcome by traffic’.

‘We want to live in a world not blighted by traffic pollution where the car is seen as the go to form of transport,’ he said. ‘We want cycling to be made safer and easier.’

‘It’s a real fun, event with a party and carnival atmosphere.

‘Last year we had 300 people and we reckon we’ve had even more this year.

‘It’s people of all genders, shapes and sizes.

‘Obviously some people are a bit taken aback and some can be negative but we are really pleased with the reaction we’ve had.’
