Three earthquakes rock the Hunter Valley wine region in the space of three hours – with tremors felt in Sydney

Three earthquakes have rocked the Hunter Valley wine region in the same amount of hours.

Tremors were felt as far away as Sydney on Monday afternoon, Geoscience Australia said.

‘We are receiving hundreds of reports from as far away as Sydney and Newcastle for two earthquakes near Muswellbrook, NSW,’ it said. 

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake was recorded near Muswellbrook, about 240 kilometres north of Sydney, at 3.27pm on Monday.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake followed about one-hour later. Both quakes were at a depth of 10 kilometres.  

Denman, about a 30-minute drive south-west of Muswellbrook, was then struck by a magnitude 2.9 earthquake at 6.11pm. 

Geoscience Australia said more than 480 people reported feeling an earthquake.
