Hyundai Kona Electric Car takes Which? product of the year top spot

From an electric car which will set you back £38,000 to products such as reusable cups which have flooded the country.

Consumer rights champion Which? has revealed its top ten products of the year which include electrical items and even home appliances.

Researchers put to the test over 3,500 launches based on how innovative a product was, as well as its value for money. 

While the most expensive product on the list came in at over £30,000, the cheapest product was just £12, for a reusable cup.

But what product is best for you and will it make it into your stocking this Christmas? Below we list the top products as rated by Which? 

Hyundai Kona Electric Car 

Hyundai’s electric car gas beaten Apple AirPods and Amazon Kindle to be named Which?’s product of the year for 2019.

The Hyundai Kona Electric Vehicle beat 3,500 other contenders, which were nominated by researchers at the consumer group.

Judges decided the vehicle makes one of the strongest cases yet for people to make the switch to emissions-free driving.

The car beat an wide range of contenders to take the top spot, from the latest high-tech releases from Apple and Sony to a reusable coffee cup and an ultra-comfy mattress.

‘The Kona Electric isn’t just an excellent and affordable EV, it’s an excellent car full stop,’ said Harry Rose, editor of Which? magazine.

‘That’s what makes it both a game-changer and our pick as the product of 2019.’

Which? was particularly impressed by the car’s driving range, which can cover 233 miles on a full charge. 

That’s only 31 miles shy of the Tesla Model 3, although the Tesla costs about £7,000 more. 

The Kona EV also boasts features including zero to 62 miles-per-hour acceleration in 7.9 seconds, rapid charging of 75 minutes and maximum speed of 104 miles-per-hour.  

Sony SRS-XB01 bluetooth speaker   

Sony’s cheap SRS-XB01 portable Bluetooth speaker and premium WH-1000XM3 over-ear headphones took the runner-up and number four spots, respectively.

The miniscule speaker  which has an innovative hidden passive radiator that enhances bass frequencies. It is less than 5ins across all its dimensions, but ‘achieved a beautifully clear and driven sound’.

IKEA Malfors mattress 

Which? said: ‘Despite a bargain basement price tag and simple foam design, it provides better support for people’s spines than many other mattresses, including luxurious handmade mattresses costing ten times more.

‘It performed well in rigorous tests that include running a barrel over a mattress thousands of times to simulate 10 years of use and it was found to be breathable, long-lasting and excellent at preventing the transfer of movement from one side of the bed to the other.’

 Sony WH-10000XM3 over-ear headphones

The Sony headphones are noise cancelling and mean you can get peace and quiet even in the busiest times of the festive period.

They are wireless and have a battery life of thirty hours.

Amazon Kindle 2019 

The Amazon Kindle has been a firm favourite on the gift list for many years’ now as many shift towards reading on their digital devices.

It has a better battery life than the previous Kindle editions and is the perfect product for book lovers who don’t want to be lumbering their paperbacks around with them all year.

As the intensity surrounding how we can all do our bit for the environment continues.

This cup is the perfect product for those who want to do their bit as it is the world’s first reusable cup made from used paper cups.

It is also 100 per cent leak proof.

Apple 2019 AirPods  

Which? has rated the new AirPods highly despite many people being critical when the first hit the market.

Many had thought they would be water proof but Apple just updated the previous version of the product.

Apple iPad Pro 11 

The newest release by Apple includes an 11-inch edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display with ProMotion, True Tone and wide colour.

As well as this it also has Face ID for secure authentication and Apple Pay.

Realme 3 Pro smartphone 

One surprise product to make the top 10 was the remarkably cheap Realme 3 Pro smartphone, which costs just £165.

The phone placed ninth and was praised for its ‘magic’ combination of looks and performance with a large, vibrant screen, great battery life and smooth operation.

Experts said its appeal and value ‘raised questions around paying the £1,000+ prices that today’s more well-known brands command for their premium models’.

LG GBB92STAXP fridge freezer

The fridge freezer was one of the main home appliances on the list, also making it into the top ten.

What does Which? say: ‘It is a stylish steel fridge freezer that not only looks the part but is also packed full of features. It’s not cheap, but with an A+++ energy label and a compressor guaranteed for 20 years’

Which? conducts extreme avoidance manoeuvres in every car it tests to find out how easy they are to control in emergency situations.

The consumer group says it tests how well a mattress supports a person’s back by analysing the shape of their spine at 36 different points. 

Which also reviews a wide range of products and is involved in various campaigns to help consumers make the right purchases for them.
