i-D magazine celebrates 40th anniversary with commemorative picture book

To celebrate its 40-year history, i-D magazine has released a stylish coffee table book of images from the fashion magazine’s archive.  

Wink and Smile! The First Forty Years saw the publication’s editor-in-chief Alastair McKimm spend two years combing through the magazine’s archive to select images to include in the commemorative book.

Each chapter of the book focuses on a decade of the magazine’s history features a mix of original magazine spreads, text pieces, archival imagery, covers, and new essays exploring the history of i-D. 

Iconic photoshoots of celebrities from Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell and Madonna all feature in the book, released earlier this month.  

The book will feature portrait shots of late singer Amy Winehouse at the age of 25 shot by Bryan Adams on a private Caribbean for the magazine’s Hot Beaches Issue in December 2008

Images of Madonna appearing in her first ever cover shoot for the magazine’s Sexsense Issue, shot by Mark Lebon in London in 1984, will also feature alongside an interview with the star.

Founded by Terry Jones in 1980, i-D has since seen 500 covers with stars including Justin Bieber, Gisele Bündchen, Björk, Chloë Sevigny, Lara Stone and Bella Hadid.

The fashion magazine is known for each star providing a wink and smile on each front cover—a graphic representation of the magazine’s logo.

The British bimonthly magazine has nurtured a series of fashion talents, from David Sims to Juergen Teller, Edward Enninful to Wolfgang Tillmans, Tyler Mitchell and Harley Weir. 

The magazine is currently run by McKimm, who was born and raised in Northern Ireland before studying fashion design at Nottingham Art School and beginning a fashion career in London.  

He has worked alongside brands and designers including Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Saint Laurent, The Row and Victoria Beckham, for whom he has consulted on campaigns and fashion shows. 

Acclaimed photographers including Craig McDean, Daniel Jackson, David Sims, Glen Luchford, Gus Van Sant, Inez & Vinoodh, Mario Sorrenti, Mert and Marcus, Steven Klein and Willy Vanderperre all appear in the book.
