‘I think I’d go missing for a few months:’ Roy Keane gives critique of Man Utd’s loss to Liverpool

Roy Keane has given a damning critique of Manchester United’s 7-0 capitulation to Liverpool at Anfield, claiming he was ‘thankful’ that he had never been a part of a team that had been beaten that badly.’

The Red Devils suffered their largest defeat since Boxing Day 1931 where they were again beaten 7-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all scoring during the match. 

After the game, Roy Keane was on punditry to give his take on the performance and as you’d expect from the former Manchester United midfielder, he was critical of how Erik ten Hag’s side performance, criticising their leaders in particular.    

‘United have to take their medicine,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘[Bruno] Fernandes’ body language today was disgraceful. You wouldn’t be happy with him in the dressing room after the game.

‘I see one or two players today coming out at half time. They’re having a laugh an a joke at 1-0 down. I don’t like that. That circus can creep back into the club.

‘You’re here to work it’s a serious business. None of this laughing and joking business. West Ham let them off the hook the other night. I wonder if De Gea will get a presentation tonight, letting seven goals in. 

‘If you’re an international goalkeeper and you let in seven goals, that last goal was school boy stuff.’ 

Earlier in the week, Keane had spoken out about how the club had paraded several trophies prior to their match against West Ham, and had been critical of the mentality of the players, after a lacklustre first half. 

Yet, the Irishman’s analysis of today’s match was much more scathing, with Keane admitting that he was glad he’d never been involved in such a bad defeat.  

‘Shocking game really. United’s senior players were embarrassing, didn’t show any leadership. 

‘Tough day for United. Thank god I’ve never been part of a team that got beat that bad. When the going went tough they went missing.

‘All logic goes out the window when you come here. Liverpool were brilliant. They were still trying to get more goals at the end of the game. They were back to their very, very best,’ he said, lauding the home side for their excellent win.

‘I never thought United were back to their very best, they have been giving teams chances in the last few weeks, teams have let them off the hook. 

‘Liverpool didn’t let them off the hook today. They were clinical, they were ruthless. The big players let the club down today. If you got beaten by 7-0, I think id go missing for a few months. It really is that embarrassing. But they have to bounce back. They’ve got a big European game in the week. Liverpool looked sharper mentally. I’m in shock.’

Speaking on the second goal scored by Nunez, Keane said: ‘There was no comeback after this. United didn’t get a tackle in. They’re all over the place. Shaw had a really poor game. I can’t remember the goals there were that many!  

‘This is from United’s corner, what a finish on his weaker side. You can forgive players having a bad day but this was something else. When you’re passing people like Robbie Fowler you’ve got to be some player.
