Do YOU think Chlamydia is an acceptable baby name?

The unnamed woman took to the Reddit sub-thread ‘Unpopular Opinion’ with a post titled: ‘Chlamydia would make a beautiful girl name.’

In her explanation, which has recently resurfaced, she said: ‘”Chlamydia, come over here! Did you do your homework, Chlamydia?”

‘I just think it sounds great.

‘They should call the STD something different so we can finally start using it.’

For anyone not clued up, chlamydia is one of the most commonly reported sexually-transmitted diseases in the US – with 1,644,416 cases identified in 2021.

It stems from bacteria called chlamydia trachomatis and is passed through contact, via vaginal, anal or oral sex.

If left untreated it can damage a woman’s fallopian tubes and cause infertility. In very rare cases it can cause infertility in men too.

And so, unsurprisingly, it did not take long for other social media users to poke fun at the suggested baby name.

Another added: ‘I’m sorry bro, I think that ship has sailed on naming kids that name at this point lol.’

And a third joked: ‘”This is my daughter Chlamydia, she has been itching to meet you.”‘

The responses came in thick and fast with moderators eventually deciding to lock the comment section.
