One clip featured the vet dancing, while a title card appeared on the screen that read: ‘Top 5 BEST dog breeds for first time owners.’

His list of the five breeds then appeared on the screen. The clip was accompanied by a caption that read: ‘These amazing breeds are all suitable for first time owners as they generally have a great temperament, are relatively easy to train and are not overtly aggressive or difficult to socialise.

‘It is worth noting that Dachshunds are prone to getting back problems, Yorkies get terrible teeth and finally the Cavalier as an honourable mention.

‘They are a lovely lovely breeds but unfortunately suffer with a genetic heart condition which is why they aren’t truly a part of my list.’

He then listed the five breeds, starting at his fifth and ending with his number one pick.

5. Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire Terriers are considered by many to be excellent family pets, due to their generally affectionate nature, as well as their playful temperament.

These small dogs, which can stand at around 7in tall and weigh around 7lb are energetic and need mental stimulation.

They also require a significant amount of grooming as they hair-like, long coats.

4. Poodle

There are several reasons many people believe Poodles make good first-time pooches.

The breed, which comes in a range of sizes, tends to be friendly, intelligent and warm.

While they do have specific grooming needs, this does not outweigh their other benefits.

3. Dachshund

The small size of Dachshund can be a positive point for first time dog owners who live in smaller houses or apartments.

Personality-wise, the breed tends to be affectionate, and good at forming bonds with their human families.

In addition, they are generally described as being intelligent, so as well as enjoying mental stimulation, they can be trained, with positive reinforcement being the best method.

One thing that should be noted is that due to their long spines, they can be prone to back injuries, and so certain activities (like jumping from tall heights) should be avoided.

2. Golden Retriever

It is widely believed that Golden Retrievers are a good choice for people who have never had a dog before.

The breed is known for being gentle, as well as loving and affectionate, and they tend to get on well with both adults and children, as well as other animals.

They need a lot of exercise, which means those who have Golden Retrievers have to be active, providing sufficient walks.

Finally, the breed tends to love learning, which means that they can be trained more easily than many other types of dog.

1. Labrador

As one of the UK’s favourite breeds, Labradors are good-natured and highly intelligent, which makes them great for people looking for their first dog.

They are active dogs who are energetic and they love exercise, like going for walks.

As well as being easy to train, they tend to get on well with adults and children alike, in addition to other family pets.
