I’m an Australian living in the UK – I can’t believe the huge difference in British chocolate compared to the treats Down Under

First introduced in 1905, Cadbury sells more than 350million chocolate bars every year and is now loved the world over.

But an Australian living in the UK took to TikTok to share a huge difference she noticed between the Cadbury bars in the UK versus Down Under.

Jess Chate, 21, filmed herself in a Sainsbury’s chocolate aisle three days ago and her sweet revelation has amassed more than 2.9million views on TikTok.

The Aussie, who is an aspiring singer, points her phone camera at the stacks of Cadbury on the supermarket shelves and says: ‘I just wanted to draw awareness to the fact that in the UK they do their chocolate in landscape.’

That is all it took to throw TikTok users into a frenzy, kicking off a heated debate in the comments about the proper orientation of chocolate bars.

A TikTok user said: ‘This weirds me out. Portrait is the only way.’ Others claimed that eating chocolate in the British ‘landscape’ style would make them feel as if they were ‘eating a Wonka bar’.

Another Aussie living in London commented: ‘I cannot believe I never noticed this.’ Someone said: ‘It is landscape in South Africa too.’

‘It’s the same in Germany’, another added.

The original creator Jess uploaded a follow-up video today explaining her new theory. Perhaps landscape chocolate is a ‘European thing’?

‘Big news, I am in France,’ she said as she examined the chocolate on display. ‘We have discovered that the chocolate here is, in fact, in portrait.

‘Crazy Stuff. The little differences continue.’

While many users verified Jess’s theory claiming that chocolate is sold in horizontal packaging in the likes of Finland, others did not agree.

One commenter threw a spanner in the works and said: ‘I remember going to Germany and finding out that chocolate was square – neither landscape or portrait.’

Another wrote: ‘In Sweden, milk chocolate is landscape and dark chocolate is in portrait.’

Femail has approached Cadbury for comment.

The landscape versus portrait chocolate fiasco continued on BBC Radio One.

Presenter Jamie Laing weighed in on the debate and said: ‘I know exactly what she [Jess] means.

‘When you go into the confectionary aisle at the supermarket or the news agents or whatever it is, chocolate in the UK is put on its side. It’s length ways, it’s landscape.’

But Laing, who founded confectionary company Candy Kittens, came up with a new theory entirely. ‘Actually posh chocolate in the UK is usually portrait,’ he said. ‘Like a Lindt.’
