Her new friend Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) has become occupied with trying to get back into the White House

President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) had promised in last week’s episode that he would help her with getting back into the White House… but it seems that is not the case, as we learn in Tuesday night’s episode, The Telephone Hour, where Linda starts recording her phone conversations with Monica.

Recording: President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) had promised in last week’s episode that he would help her with getting back into the White House… but it seems that is not the case, as we learn in Tuesday night’s episode, The Telephone Hour, where Linda starts recording her phone conversations with Monica

The episode begins in August 1997, where Monica meets with Bill Clinton’s Chief of Staff Marsha Scott (Rebecca Lowman) who says she has known the President since they were teenagers.

She asks why she’s here and Monica says she applied for a position for a National Security Office back at the White House.

Monica says she was told that she was coming back and Marsha says she got a rundown of her departure, but she doesn’t know why she wants to come back here.

‘Unfortunately, that NSC job has been filled. I’ll just have to find something else,’ and Monica tells her that it’s been a year since she was told she’d be back in the White House.

Linda comes into work and Monica asks why she’d do this, holding up the Newsweek magazine, and Linda thinks she’s a target but Monica doesn’t think so.

Linda says she thinks she’s a target now and she’s at war with the White House but Monica plainly states that no one wanted her there.

Naturally this upsets Linda to no end, who stomps off as Monica chases after her, saying she didn’t mean it like that.

Linda says maybe she’ll write a ‘tell-all book,’ but Monica is surprised, as Linda says, ‘Don’t be a narcissist, it’ll be about me.’

Linda gets to her desk and finds a mysterious list of enemies of Clinton who have met ‘violent and questionable ends.’

Back home, Linda makes dinner when she gets a call from Monica, as they make up over the phone, while Linda watches Bill Clinton glad-hand politicians on TV.

Linda comes home with some groceries, asking her kids for some help, as she gets a call from Lucianne, telling her she’s found information of major importance.

She tells Lucianne that this woman has taken her in as her confidante and she is the girlfriend of the President of the United States.

She says she’s been with him for two years, which clearly shocks Lucianne, as Lucianne asks if she would consider coming forward.

Lucianne says she could do a book and get six figures easily, with Lucianne saying she needs real proof.

Linda insists she has notes and spreadsheets and all sorts of evidence, when Lucianne says she could record the calls.

Linda wonders if that’s legal, and Lucianne says it’s ‘completely kosher,’ telling Linda to think about it and call her back.

When she hangs up, Lucianne takes out the tape of the conversation she just recorded and labels it, throwing it in a drawer with a lot of other tapes.

Monica goes to see the President and asks Betty (Rae Dawn Chong) who says that he’s watching G.I. Jane with Chelsea.

Betty gives her some gifts Bill got her from Martha’s Vineyard, as Monica jokes that everything he gets her is so ugly, and Betty says, ‘One word: Arkansas.’

Monica tries to ask Betty about getting work back at the White House, but she insists Bill is trying to help.

Monica ultimately doesn’t believe her and she storms out of the office and runs in the rain to a pay phone where she calls Linda.

‘He won’t even see me for two minutes and I spend every minute of every day thinking about him. I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to exist,’ Monica says.

Linda calls Lucianne and complains about Bill, with Lucianne saying the girl must be losing her mind.

Lucianne makes it clear that the press will cut her up, ass Linda insists she’s no victim and she knew what she was doing.

Lucianne says, ‘You’ll lose her as a friend,’ as Linda adds, ‘I’ve made my peace with that.’

Linda is seen going into a Radio Shack, as a clerk shows her the differences in some tape recorders, as she says, ‘I just need it to work.’

Linda is getting her tape recorder set up and calls Monica, who says she’s fine, saying she just got off the treadmill.

She says she misses him, as Linda presses for precise details of when they made out, and when the call is done, she labels the tape and sets it in a bowl.

Mike Isikoff (Danny Jacobs) comes to visit Lucianne, with Linda revealing she’s going to write a book, as Mike wants to know how he fits in.

He starts to listen to the tape and he stops the tape, saying it violates his journalistic integrity, and he says there really isn’t anything here, no sexual harassment, no quid pro quo, nothing.

Kate says Monica Lewinsky will never get a job at the White House, making it clear she is not coming back to the White House.

‘How hard is it to tell the truth? I’ve given him a million opportunities,’ Monica says.

Linda says she should talk to Vernon Jordan about getting a job somewhere else, but Monica starts crying.

Monica calls Betty at home, crying, hysterical, with Betty insisting they can fix this but Monica hangs up.

Monica gets a call from Bill, angry, asking what’s wrong with her, saying, ‘Betty didn’t come out of the Jim Crow South to work in the damn White House to be yelled at by some fucking 24-year-old.’

Monica retorts, ‘Are you kidding? I’ve been good. I’ve driven myself crazy trying to be good. You are the one that promised me that Bob Nash would take care of my job, and he didn’t. And then Marsha, you said, would take care of it. And now all she’s done is lie and be a bitch to me.’

‘Damn it, Monica. You swore you wouldn’t cause trouble. You know, if I’d known this is who you were, I never would’ve gotten involved with you,’ Bill says.

‘F**k you. You promised me I could come back to the White House,’ Monica says, as an exasperated Bill adds, ‘Oh, for God’s sake. All I think about is you and your job. I’m obsessed with it. My whole life has become about finding you a job.’

Monica says she’s never coming to see him again because she’s moving to New York, saying there is no point in staying in D.C.

She asks if he can help her find something there, asking if Vernon Jordan could help her find something ,not in government.

He says he’ll call her first thing in the morning, and asks if they’re still friends, and she says yes.

Monica says she’ll never see him again if she moves to New York, but Bill says he plans on spending a lot of time in New York when he’s done, adding, ‘Life is long, Monica.’

Monica goes to see Vernon Jordan (Blair Underwood), as she notices a photo with Vernon and Bill golfing.

‘Yeah, he was barely 30 when we met. And we recognized ourselves in each other. We both grew up Southern and both grew up poor. Now, it’s a tired old cliché, but I promise you, the instant I first spoke to him, I said to myself, “That man is going to be president one day,”’ Vernon said.

Vernon mentions that Revlon is in New York and he happens to be on the board of directors, as he thinks a few well-placed phone calls could open up a job.

He walks her to the elevator as they make small talk and right when she walks into the elevator and Vernon gives her a pat on the behind a few times, before walking away.

Monica and Linda get closer, as we see in a montage of phone calls that Monica all records, as it’s clear the Revlon job won’t happen.

They talk about her diet and all sorts of things, as Linda’s daughter Alison thinks they should get another line because no one can ever call her.

The calls continue through October and November, with their montage ending as they are talking before falling asleep.

Before she hangs up, Monica says, ‘Linda, this all has to end.’

Monica calls Linda and says out of nowhere she gets a call from Bill Richardson about working on his U.N. staff in New York.

Still, Monica is very upset, but Linda thinks it’s a good thing because the President clearly made some calls, but she is mad that he never called her.

Linda thinks she should take the job but she is still mad that the President won’t see her and hangs up when her pizza gets there.

Linda gets home and finds a mess when her phone rings, and it’s Monica, saying, ‘Guess what, he called?’

Monica tells her that Bill said she didn’t have to to take the U.N. jon, ‘and that Bill Richardson is just a good person for me to know and that he’s going to call Vernon and see what’s going on on his end.’

Monica adds she feels, ‘so much better’ and she just needs, ‘to make peace with New York. I just get so freaked out at the idea of saying goodbye to him. Do you think I should go to the Christmas party? Maybe I should ask Betty. Oh, God, I owe Betty an apology, don’t I?’

Linda freaks out and tells Monica she doesn’t want to hear about any of this anymore.

‘One minute, you’re crying about getting a call from our U.N. Ambassador and saying how much these terrible people have hurt you. And the next minute, you’re ecstatic and saying you owe Betty an apology. -Why are you being so intense? -Do me a favor. Take your delirium and your incessant phone calls and this whole sick situation and foist it on someone else. Your mom, your friends, not me,’ Linda says before hanging up with a confused Monica on the other end.

Monica calls Linda over and over again, saying, ‘You know me, you know I’m just gonna keep calling,’ while she gets another call from Lucianne, who says she shouldn’t keep her waiting.’

Linda gets another tape in and calls Monica at work, with Monica saying she’s worried about her, and Linda said she took a sick day.

Linda said she needs to apologize and her behavior has been unacceptable, but Monica says it’s fine.

Linda says she has something to confess…. She lost three pounds, while crying during the conversation.

Linda comes to Monica’s apartment and raids her closet, as she picks up a blue dress… as Monica stops her, saying that dress is ‘really dirty.’

‘I wore it the last time I saw Bill,’ she says… as Linda notices a white stain on the dress.

Linda said she thought Bill, ‘never completed,’ but Moncia says it was the first time they were together after the election.

‘So excited to see me that he, you know… He finished. But I didn’t even notice. I mean, no one did. I went out to dinner that night with friends. When I got back home, I changed. And I, uh, assumed it was guacamole. And then I realized…’ Monica said.

Linda asked if she was ‘saving it’ but she said, ‘no, ew,’ but she hadn’t gotten it dry cleaned yet because she hadn’t had to wore it yet.

They start talking about their past dating histories, with Linda saying she went on, ‘one date it lasted 25 years and the short f**k stopped paying alimony.’

Monica talks about her past relationships, including Andy, a ‘youngish’ ‘drama tech guy’ at her high school, adding whenever she liked someone, he never liked her back.

She said she started getting into the drama club and that’s how she met Andy, adding casually that she knew he had sex with one of her friends.

Monica says he explained Les Miserables to him in his car and she, ‘fell completely, obsessively in love with him. And then it… It all just got so chaotic,’ revealing she found out he was engaged.

She also casually mentions that she lost her virginity at 14 to a camp counselor, ‘but I guess it doesn’t count because I said “No” and he pulled out,’ which shocks Linda.

Monica adds he asked her to be friends with his wife because it would be easier for her to be around, which Linda thought was ‘sick.’

He told her to look at schools in Portland and she went to one, but when he lost his job in L.A. for ‘f***ing one too many students,’ he moved his family to Portland.

‘I mean, it was like without him I was nothing. What can I say? It was my most significant relationship. Till Bill. I guess maybe they put something in my head, like this is all I deserve,’ Monica says to Linda, who can barely process all of this.

Linda calls Lucianne saying she can’t do this anymore, revealing Monica, ‘has a blue dress from the Gap. She wore it to a radio address. Lucy, it’s got his semen on it. She’s saving it like a souvenir.’

Linda says this has to end now because she can’t take it, and she can’t wait for a book, when a solution presents itself: Paula Jones.

‘If they make me testify, this whole thing becomes public,’ Linda says, as Lucianne says she ‘loves it’ and will make a few phone calls… one of whom are to the lawyers helping Paula Jones’ lawyers.

Monica is at work and gets an email she likes, before she goes to tell her boss Ken Bacon that she won’t be able to work after January 1 because she’s moving to New York City.

When he asks what she’s going to do, Monica says, ‘I’m going to move on with my life.’

Linda is at home when she gets a knock on her door, getting served a subpoena to testify in Jones v. Clinton.

Bill Clinton is in the Oval Office when Bob (Christopher McDonald) comes in with the witness list, saying they all looked familiar except one, Monica Lewinsky.

Bob asks if any of these women would pose a problem, they could settle this and it would all go away.

‘Bob, do you think I’m f***ing crazy?’ Bill says coldly, as Bob quietly leaves the Oval Office.

Bill leaves the Oval office and walks down the hall, past the portraits of former Presidents, before he gets to his bedroom, with Hillary sound asleep, as the episode comes to an end.

The preview for next week’s episode finds the tension increasing exponentially as both Monica and Linda have been called to testify in the Paula Jones trial.

Linda insists if they ask about Moncia, she can’t commit perjury, while Linda is asked for copies of her tapes and Monica saying, ‘I’m going to deny it and it will be over.’
