In-N-Out has shocked its devotees by adding its first new menu item in 15 years: hot cocoa.
The popular West Coast burger chain made the addition on January 1 with little fanfare and no public announcements, leaving it to customers to spread the word on social media.
The Ghirardelli cocoa, served with a packet of tiny marshmallows, is the first addition to the chain’s famously short menu since lemonade was added 15 years ago.
The chain confirmed on Wednesday that the cocoa was a permanent addition to the menu of all of its 300-odd locations, which span California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Utah and Oregon.

In-N-Out Burger President Lynsi Snyder noted in a statement that hot cocoa was not exactly a new menu item for the chain.
In the early years of the chain, which was founded in 1948, her grandparents Harry and Esther Snyder served hot cocoa, she said.
‘For a certain generation, hot cocoa is an In-N-Out classic, and we hope it will be a favorite of a new generation,’ Snyder said.
Fans of the chain freaked out at the new menu addition, sharing their enthusiasm on social media.
‘IN N OUT HAS HOT CHOCOLATE I REPEAT IN N OUT HAS HOT CHOCOLATE,’ tweeted actress Sarah Gilman.
‘WTFFF… In-N-Out sells hot chocolate now,’ wrote one Twitter user.
‘In-N-Out’s Hot Cocoa is the bomb,’ wrote another.
Last month, the chain announced plans to add up to 50 locations in Colorado in the coming year.
