Indian elephant chases a worker as it hunts for palm fruit

  • Brick burners use the dried fruit liquor as fuel to bake the bricks
  • The elephants find the smell intoxicating and so come rushing towards the kilns
  • One unfortunate worker was caught in the cross fire as the animal searched 

Dramatic footage has emerged of a dazed elephant chasing a labourer through a brick kiln, in India, in search of intoxicating palm fruits.

The bewildered elephant can be seen stumbling through the roofed rows based in a Coimbatore village, in Tamil Nadu.

The giant is hunting for the fruits used as fuel for the brick burners – with the elephants finding the smell intoxicating.

In this video, the animal had apparently raided the furnace hoping to get his fill of palm fruits. 

When his hunt failed, the tusked animal went on a rampage – especially after the worker tried to send the mammal away.

The lone elephant becomes more frustrated after becoming stuck in the building.

The labourer can be seen inching closer and then further away from the elephant – enticing the disgruntled beast’s fury even more.

The man-animal conflict has become increasingly prevalent in Coimbatore in recent years as the area expands. 

Wildlife activists have taken up the issue of using palm fruits as a fuel for both animal welfare and environmental reasons.

It is said that the attitude towards the mammals has changed in the last two decades as the area’s development continues. 

Now many farmers and labourers are wary of any elephant that they lay their eyes on.
