Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s lackluster opening continues as it has only made $82 million through July 4 holiday
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s lackluster opening has continued through the July 4 holiday weekend, as industry estimates had the summer action film making about $82 million in domestic revenues through the July 4 holiday.
The James Mangold-directed action adventure, which puts Harrison Ford back in the titular role for the fifth time, made an estimated $11.8 million Monday, Variety reported, bringing its domestic revenue up to $71 million.
The movie, which also stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas and Mads Mikkelsen, needs to have stronger numbers to be profitable, as Disney and Lucasfilm spent $295 million on production of the motion picture.
Adding to the pressure, the film had tepid results in its international debut, raking in $70.1 million in overseas markets through Monday, Box Office Mojo reported.
The July 4 holiday is not traditionally a strong draw itself for theaters, but helps studios pad totals of summer blockbusters put out at this time of year.
The latest: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s lackluster opening has continued through the July 4 holiday weekend, as industry estimates had the summer action film making about $82 through the July 4 holiday.
Another series of obstacles comes through other high-profile films aimed at older audiences slated to hit theaters this month.
They include Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One starring Tom Cruise, which is due out July 12; and the Christopher Nolan biographical drama Oppenheimer.
Regardless of its commercial performance, Disney had said the new Indiana Jones motion picture was going to be the final movie in the five-film series.
Previous released include 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark; 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom; 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
In the new film, Ford plays the archeologist in a race ‘against time to retrieve a legendary artifact that can change the course of history,’ the studio said.

Elsewhere in the box office totals, the Pixar movie Elemental made $3 million Monday to bring up its domestic intake to $92 million.
Like Indiana Jones, it faces a daunting task, as its production budget was $200 million.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse made $3 million Monday to up its domestic revenue to $343 million. No Hard Feelings, starring Jennifer Lawrence, made $1.89 million on Monday, while Transformers: Rise of the Beasts earned $1.7 million.
