Indigenous footy legend pinpoints the habit that proves Latrell Mitchell isn’t a team player

  • Comes as the Rabbitohs are yet to win a game this NRL season
  • Corowa said Mitchell ‘needs his football to do the talking’

Indigenous footy legend Larry Corowa has urged Latrell Mitchell to stop watching himself on the big screen during NRL matches and ‘be a team player.’

His take on the struggling fullback comes as the Rabbitohs are staring at four successive defeats ahead of their Good Friday clash against the Bulldogs.

Another loss will heap even more pressure on coach Jason Demetriou and the playing group, with the team sitting at the bottom of the ladder.

Corowa believes the star fullback needs to change his mindset so South Sydney can rediscover that winning feeling.

‘Latrell doesn’t do himself any favours – he just needs to concentrate on being the class player he is and do everything to win for the team,’ the former Balmain Tigers great told Wide World of Sport.

‘He needs to let his football do the talking – stop looking at the big screen, stop [trying to be] intimidating.

‘Be a team player [each week] and everyone will love the new Latrell.

‘Put your head down, train harder, simple … and the results will come.’

Corowa – nicknamed the ‘Black Flash’ during his playing days – is also well aware of the scrutiny Mitchell is under as the highest profile Indigenous player in the game.

Despite being a former Roosters premiership winner, Mitchell was booed every time he touched the ball at Allianz Stadium last Friday night.

He was also sin-binned for a late hit on rival fullback James Tedesco.

‘I didn’t have many haters back in the day – they were pretty much all good supporters from every team,’ Corowa added.

‘But when I did cop some stick it just made me more determined to try harder, and Latrell needs to take the same approach.’
