Ineos delays EVs over low demand and tougher net zero rules expected under a Labour government

Delay: Ineos Automotive will hold off from launching its Fusilier jeep (pictured)

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s car firm has delayed production of its electric SUV, due to lack of demand and tougher net zero rules expected under a Labour government.

Ineos Automotive will hold off from launching its Fusilier jeep, which hoped to use a small petrol-fuelled engine to top up the battery.

But the company expects this to fall foul of bans on the sale of new petrol cars in Europe from 2035, with Labour vowing to bring the UK ban forward to 2030.

Sir Jim, the petrochemicals tycoon who also co-owns Manchester United football club, outlined plans for the electric SUV in February. Ineos has not said when it will launch the Fusilier, which had been slated for release in 2027.
