Infant and four-year-old survive horror crash that killed their dad and two others in head-on collision

  • Two children – an infant and four-year-old – survived a horror crash in Tasmania 
  • Three men, including the children’s father, died at the scene on Wednesday
  • Police said it appeared the father had strayed onto the wrong side of the road

Two young children have survived but lost their father in a horror crash which killed three people in Tasmania.

The head-on crash between a white Toyota Prado and a silver Mazda BT50 utility happened on the Bass Highway near Carrick, west of Launceston, at about 5:30am on Wednesday.

The driver of the Toyota died at the scene, and police said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

His two children – an infant and four-year-old who were in the back seat – suffered non life-threatening injuries and were taken to Launceston General Hospital.

Two adult passengers in the Mazda were also killed in the crash.

Police said initial investigations indicated the father driving the Prado who strayed onto the wrong side of the road.

The did not believe speed was a factor and are looking at whether drugs or alcohol played a part.
