Injured Christian Petracca makes final decision over his AFL career following rumours swirling over his Demons tenure

Melbourne Demons superstar Christian Petracca has finally spoken out about rumours swirling that he could be set to leave the AFL club, announcing his final decision after weeks of speculation. 

The Demons gun was left with four broken ribs, a punctured lung and lacerated spleen when Collingwood’s Darcy Moore accidentally kneed him on June 10. 

And he has been maligned ever since, with reports of disharmony in the Demons ranks and that a disgruntled Petracca wanted out despite being contracted until 2029.

It was reported that he expressed his desire to leave during his exit interview on Monday, sharing his feelings with some teammates. 

Petracca has remained silent publicly about his future until now, with the Demons star releasing a statement declaring he will remain loyal to Melbourne. 

‘Over the last few weeks, there’s been a lot of speculation regarding my role at the Melbourne Football Club,’ Petracca said in the statement.

‘This has occurred as part of the end-of-year review process, in which I voiced my concerns as a leader, wanting better for our club, playing group, and fans.

During his recovery, Petracca has been rumoured to be looking for a trade out of the Demons, claims he has now denied

‘During this time, I have been in open communication with the player leadership group and club leaders to ensure we can work together to improve as a club.

‘I make no apologies for wanting to better our club and contribute to our success both on and off the field.

‘I love my footy – it remains my number one priority and always has been. As for my future at the Melbourne Football Club, I remain committed to playing for the red and the blue.’

The Demons were facing a crossroads, after missing out on the 2024 finals and with Alex Neal-Bullen and potentially Kysaiah Pickett walking out the door.

Melbourne won the premiership in 2021 but struggled to cash in on top four finishes in 2022 and 2023 before crashing out of the top eight altogether this season.

Melbourne Demons chief executive Gary Pert has insisted through the whole ordeal that Petracca would stay at the club

The loss of Petracca would have been a hammer blow for the Demons, with club CEO Gary Pert also moving to assure fans that Petracca is going nowhere.

‘As we’ve stated all along, Christian is a much-loved member of the Melbourne Football Club and we value him immensely, not only as a player, but as a person and a leader,’ Pert said. 

‘Over the past month, we have been open about the fact that Christian has shared some thoughts on how we can improve and better ourselves as a footy club.

‘These conversations have made us a better organisation and we’re grateful that Christian, like all our leaders, are willing to have the tough conversations to drive success.

‘We move forward from here, aligned, and steadfast in our commitment to achieving the success we know our AFL program is capable of.

‘Most importantly, I know a lot of young Demons proudly wearing the number 5 on their back will be eagerly counting down the days until we see Christian back out on the footy field playing the game he loves.’
