The Rabbitohs are reportedly prepared to pay Sam Burgess a $3.6million payout if he announces his retirement from Rugby League due to an ongoing shoulder injury.
The 2014 premiership winner could be handed the remainder of his contract as a lump sum from the South Sydney side if he is unable to play again, according to Nine News.
Burgess, 30, been struggling with shoulder pain, with a post-surgery infection having ‘eaten away and destroyed’ his shoulder.
It’s not yet known if the NRL will take the money out of the Rabbitohs’ salary cap.
The club was allowed to have ex-captain Greg Inglis’ salary taken from its cap when injuries forced him into early retirement earlier this year.
Burgess’ injury is understood to be ‘too severe for a normal player’ to carry on with.
‘To be honest I don’t know a lot about it because I’ve not seen any scans and I’ve not spoken to any doctors. That’s something that’s personal for Sam,’ his brother Tom Burgess said.
‘He knows himself the best and the doctors and medical staff know a hell of a lot than me. He’s always been tough and he’s brave so I suppose he’ll make a decision [based on] what’s best for him and his family.’

Burgess was visiting his children at his father-in-law Mitchell Hooke’s home in Bowral on Saturday when the pair began arguing, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Phoebe was not home at the time, but is reportedly preparing to relocate two-year-old Poppy and 10-month-old Billy to Bowral to be closer to her family.
The couple are believed to have separated for the second time just weeks ago.
‘One thing is for sure, it is definitely over this time and they are now trying to figure out how to co-parent long-term,’ a source reportedly told the Sunday Confidential.
Mr Hooke allegedly asked Burgess to leave the property after the pair got into an argument, according to the paper.
The publication reported Burgess agreed to leave, but the pair continued to argue on his way out.
Mr Hooke called police after Burgess left.

Daily Mail Australia does not accuse Burgess of any wrongdoing on the day in question, only that he has been summoned to appear in court.
It is also not alleged he did anything wrong by visiting the home.
A NSW Police spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia ‘police are investigating an incident at a property near Bowral shortly before 5pm yesterday.’
‘There are no reports of any injuries.’
Burgess and Phoebe rekindled their relationship in April after initially splitting last December, but an insider claimed things ‘just didn’t work’ and Sam ‘moved out several weeks ago’.
The source added: ‘The most important thing for them is that their children are happy and healthy, that is their priority.’
