Inmates climb onto roof at Brisbane detention centre

Two teenage boys have climbed onto the roof of the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre.

A Youth Justice Queensland spokeswoman said the pair accessed the roof within a construction area of the centre at Wacol, west of Brisbane, about 11.30am on Wednesday.

Prison officers in riot gear surrounded the building.

The teenagers could be seen waving building materials and throwing objects off the roof, 9 News reputed.

It was unclear why the pair climbed onto the roof.

There was no threat to their safety or that of centre staff.

The spokeswoman confirmed the pair had both voluntarily returned to ground level a few hours later.

Police will now investigate the incident.
