Inside Jamie Oliver’s amazing Land Rover Discovery kitchen

Land Rover has cooked up the ultimate luxury mobile kitchen on wheels for TV’s Naked Chef Jamie Oliver.

The bespoke Land Rover Discovery 4X4 allows him to grill a chicken from the grille, slow-cook a dish using heat from the engine, churn butter and ice-cream on the move, have a barbecue, dispense olive oil, and even pop up two slices of toast from a dashboard toaster – with pots of jam on hand to spread over them.

Created by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division for Jamie’s forthcoming YouTube cookery show, it is the only Discovery in the world that has a toaster in the centre console and a revolving rotisserie in front of the grille on which a chicken can be cooked.

Meals on wheels: The specially created Land Rover Discovery will feature on Jamie Oliver’s recently launched YouTube series, Food Tube

Jamie Oliver’s ‘dream kitchen’ turns a standard seven-seater Discovery sports utility vehicle into a very utilitarian place of work – and cooking pleasure.

It has been specially built for the chef to feature in a three-part series on his Food Tube channel from October 5.

Ingenious features include a 4.7-litre slow-cooker that sits under the bonnet beside the engine where it is heated, wheels that churn butter, a pasta maker and a gas hob. There is even a herb garden and spice rack in the rear windows.

There’s also a custom-made aluminium sink, a flat screen TV and an deployable kitchen worktop that also doubles as a dining table.

Further touches include a spice drawer, a bespoke pestle and mortar resembling a piston-head and a unique Land Rover barbecue.

The rotisserie itself is powered by an electric motor in the grille controlled by the engine speed. There are two set speeds available, a slower setting for the rotisserie and a faster one for the pasta maker, which can be set using a button under the bonnet or using the throttle. The throttle can also be used to increase the speed further.

Land Rover said:’The motion from the wheels spinning then churns the butter, which can be stored in the on-board fridge.

The same principle applies for making ice cream except the outer ring must first be filled with freezer coolant to turn the cream into ice while churning.

But they missed one culinary trick – by failing to fit Michelin-star tyres.

The conversion is based on a standard three-row seven-seater Land Rover Discovery 2.0-litre SD4 Diesel Automatic that accelerates from 0-60mph in 8 seconds and has a maximum speed of 121mph and has a starting price of £45,895.

Land Rover said: ‘All of the modifications are fully functional, meaning that Jamie and his family can cook a meal from scratch using the Discovery. As part of the project, we have filmed Jamie cooking three delicious dishes you can watch the film on Jamie’s Food Tube channel.’

The modifications are powered by a combination of the vehicle’s engine and standalone power inputs.

A high-power inverter has been integrated into the vehicle, which provides AC power for the toaster, slow cooker and TV.

Making the most of the vehicle’s existing power, the rotisserie and pasta maker are driven by the ‘power take off’ – the rotating mini-motor built into the grille which is usually used to power a winch – with the speed further increased by the throttle.

Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations SVO, based at a boutique factory on the outskirts of Coventry, said it worked with the Land Rover fan and customer ‘to bring his vision to life’.

Land Rover said: ‘The result is truly unique – it’s the only Discovery in the world that has a toaster in the centre console and a rotisserie.’

Jamie Oliver was impressed by the bespoke 4X4 kitchen on wheels. He said: ‘I gave Land Rover a massive challenge to create the ultimate kitchen on wheels. I dreamt big and asked for a lot, and what they’ve done has blown my mind.

‘I didn’t think they’d actually be able to put a slow-cooker next to the engine and an olive oil dispenser in the boot, but they did. The result is an amazing Discovery, tailored perfectly for me and the family – we love it. This unique creation means we can take our culinary adventures to the next level.’

Land Rover said:’The SVO team prides itself on making the impossible happen, so was only too happy to help bring Jamie’s ideas to life.’

David Fairbairn, head of bespoke projects at JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations division said: ‘As a team, we never imagined we would be asked to produce wheels that churn butter so it has been great fun working alongside Jamie to bring his vision to life. He really wanted to push the boundaries of what was possible with this versatile vehicle and the team fully embraced the challenge.’

He added: ‘Discovery helps our customers make every day an adventure, and this special vehicle will give Jamie and his family the chance to cook amazing meals anywhere they want to. The Bespoke team was created by SVO to enable us to really understand our most discerning clients’ needs, so we can tailor vehicles to suit their lifestyle. With up to 2,500 litres of luggage space and clever storage for 21st century family essentials, the versatile seven-seater Discovery was the perfect vehicle for SVO to modify.’
