Inside one of London’s biggest hotel rooms: A review of Hyatt’s Churchill Residential Suite

City-centre hotel rooms have a reputation for being a bit of a squeeze for the occupants – but this one bucks the trend in jaw-dropping style. It’s roughly the same size as a large detached house.

Welcome to ‘The Churchill Residential Suite’ at the Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill hotel, which is spread over 3,498 square feet (325 sq m) – that’s roughly three times bigger than the square footage of the average three-bedroom UK home. 

So, it has plenty of space for all the family – and any passing friends, too. What’s more, it’s slap-bang in the centre of London overlooking Portman Square, two minutes’ stroll from Selfridges on Oxford Street with Soho, Marylebone and Mayfair all within walking distance.

The enormous suite is spread over 3,498 square feet (325 sq m) – that’s roughly three times bigger than the square footage of the average three-bedroom UK home 

The suite is so enormous that when I checked in recently, I could barely even hear my two children when we were in separate rooms.

Elegantly decorated in calming shades of grey and taupe with mahogany furniture throughout, the suite’s four bedrooms all have their own marble bathrooms amply stocked with a vast range of Molton Brown products down to lip balm and mouth wash. 

One room can be turned into a private gym if preferred, while another is especially designed for children, complete with a pop-up tent, Childs Farm bathroom amenities, mini bathrobes and a range of toys and books.

Although staggeringly – while staff are too discreet to reveal the names of any former guests – one lets slip that the suite’s last resident stayed here for a year entirely on their own.

That’s despite the fact the master suite alone is considerably larger than the average London flat, with a walk-in wardrobe, cavernous bathroom and wraparound balcony with sofas.

If you fancy a change of scenery, you can simply head over to the opposite side of the suite where there’s a second balcony for more skyline views.

The suite also comes with a full kitchen and dedicated chef if requested, a dining room that seats 10 and a huge living room with ornate fireplace and Offenbach grand piano. 

Though the hotel opened after Sir Winston Churchill’s death and has no real link to the man himself apart from borrowing his name, both the suite and the hotel itself take the former Prime Minister as design inspiration throughout.

Walls of the suite display original artwork from Churchill himself, such as his painting ‘A Day at Chartwell’, pictured above 

This is most noticeable in the suite’s giant study, which is modelled on Churchill’s own with a Chesterfield leather armchair, shelves lined with books and even the odd bronze ornament of the top-hatted politician. 

His presence is felt in the art throughout the suite, too. Walls display curated pieces from both the hotel’s own private collection and the prestigious Thompson Gallery nearby, and even include original artwork from Churchill himself.

Of course, you can expect the full VIP treatment if you stay. A dedicated team is on hand at all times to arrange whatever your heart desires including Champagne picnics in London parks or private art gallery access.

You can also use an exclusive lift to access the suite without – horror! – mingling with other hotel guests. 

But if you really want to feel like you have London all to yourself, ask at reception for a key to the leafy, private Portman Square Gardens just across the street. 

Though the square’s residents and other hotel guests are allowed beyond its high walls and locked gate, it was completely empty when we visited despite sunny weather so we had the tennis court, children’s playground and flower-lined lawns entirely to ourselves, right in the heart of London.

If this is how the other half lives, I could definitely get used to it.
