A series of canteen menus from a school in 1973 have resurfaced online, with many amazed by the nostalgic items and very cheap prices.

One of the unearthed menus at Surrey Downs Primary School in northern Adelaide featured a Vegemite sandwich for nine cents and mixed nuts for just five cents.

Almost half a century later their menu looks very different – with a beef and tomato burger costing a much heftier $4.50 while a salad box would cost you $4.

The same healthy meal cost as little as 17 cents in June 1973, while the sweet treats on offer were also incredibly cheap by today’s standards.

A finger bun could be had for seven cents and a ‘cinnamon dunky’ for just five cents.

By comparison, the school’s modern sweet menu features a Calippo for $1.30 –  a price 26 times more expensive than treats from 46 years ago.

Another tuck shop board has also been found by the school – offering beef sandwiches for 45 cents and finer buns for 20 cents.

Teacher Jessica Wright shared the see-it-to-believe-it menus in the Surrey Downs Primary School – Old Scholars Facebook group.

‘Here are the children comparing the 1972 and 2018 canteen menu,’ she said, explaining her pupils had been busy learning about how times have changed.

Another 1977 menu from an Australian school featured foods like hot dogs for 25 cents and a Funny Faces ice block for just 5 cents.

On a recent menu from a school in Sydney’s south west, meanwhile, a meal with two chicken wedges and vegetable sticks will cost you $5.

The throwback meals were also a world away from Melbourne’s Bialik College 2016 lunctime offering – which featured a healthy homemade chia pudding with berries.
