Inside the lavish life of Bill Gates’ daughter and her $51m penthouse

Jennifer Gates knew from an early age that she would have to forge her own path because she wouldn’t be inheriting her parents’ billions, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t living a life of luxury.

The 26-year-old medical student, who is the oldest child of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his ex-wife, Melinda Gates, has moved into a $51 million penthouse in Manhattan’s trendy Tribeca neighborhood, the New York Post reported this week.

Jennifer and her husband, Olympic showjumper Nayel Nassar, 32, are expecting their first child, a baby girl, this year, and they have plenty of room for their growing family in their new six-bedroom home.

The move comes six years after her father, Bill, shared that he will be giving the vast majority of his billions away to avoid spoiling his children.

However, his oldest daughter has already proven to have a strong work ethic, and the impending arrival of his first grandchild may have swayed him to purchase her the lavish penthouse.

As Jennifer prepares for motherhood and settles into her new home, FEMAIL has taken a look back at the privileged upbringing that led to her becoming an accomplished equestrian and an aspiring doctor.

Jennifer’s father, Bill, famously co-founded Microsoft after dropping out of Harvard and became the richest person in the world in 1995, the year before she was born.

He has a current estimated net worth of $106.4 billion, according to Forbes, making him the sixth richest person in the world.

Jennifer was born in Bellevue, Washington, on April 26, 1996, and is the oldest of their three children. She is three years old than her brother, Rory, and six years older than her sister, Phoebe.

She and her siblings grew up in her parents’ 66,000-square-foot mansion overlooking Lake Washington in Medina, Washington, a suburb of Seattle.

The property, worth an estimated $131 million, is nicknamed ‘Xanadu 2.0,’ a reference to the fictional estate in the movie ‘Citizen Kane.’

The Gates family’s incredible fortune afforded Jennifer and her siblings a wealth of opportunities, but her parents taught them to be curious about the world and have a strong work ethic.

Bill and Melinda followed the ‘Love and Logic’ parenting model founded by former principal Jim Fay, school psychologist Charles Fay, and psychiatrist Foster W. Cline in 1977.

The approach dictates that parents be firm yet loving with when setting limits for their children while also refraining from emotional reactions, threats, and warnings.

The goal is to teach children ‘consequences and healthy decision-making’ by having them solve their own problems and experience failure with their parents’ empathy and support, according to the Love and Logic website.

In addition to following the 1970s parenting style, Bill and Melinda raised their children Catholic and regularly attended church with them to give them a strong moral backbone.

‘The moral systems of religion, I think, are super important. We’ve raised our kids in a religious way; they’ve gone to the Catholic church that Melinda goes to and I participate in,’ Bill told Rolling Stone in 2014. ‘I’ve been very lucky, and therefore I owe it to try and reduce the inequity in the world. And that’s kind of a religious belief. I mean, it’s at least a moral belief.’

Philanthropy is important to both of Jennifer’s parents, who founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to fight poverty, disease, and inequity around the world.

The former couple had enough money to hire dozens of housekeepers, but they made time to do the dishes and other household chores with Jennifer and her siblings every night to teach them responsibility.

‘There are still things that we do in our home that I wanted to make sure we did as parents, and that our kids participated, so they would know what it was to grow up and have responsibilities,’ Melinda explained in an interview with Business Insider in 2019.

Bill also had strict rules about technology, despite being a tech titan. In 2007, he put a cap on his kids’ screen time after his daughter, likely Jennifer, developed an attachment to a video game, according to Entrepreneur.

The Gates children weren’t allowed to get cellphones until they were 14, and their father made it clear that they needed to get jobs because they won’t be inheriting his massive fortune.

‘I don’t think that amount of money would be good for them,’ he told DailyMail.com in 2011. ‘It will be a minuscule portion of my wealth. It will mean they have to find their own way.

‘They will be given an unbelievable education and that will all be paid for. And certainly anything related to health issues we will take care of,’ he added. ‘But in terms of their income, they will have to pick a job they like and go to work.’

Jennifer credited her parents for making her a lifelong learner and always supporting her interests in a 2020 interview with Sidelines Magazine.

‘As a young kid, they always talked to me like I was an adult and weren’t willing to shy around difficult conversations,’ she said. ‘I grew up hearing about children’s mortality at the dinner table, about polio, about the HIV/AIDs epidemic.’

The medical student recalled how her mother once walked in on her playing ‘doctor’ as a child. She was telling one of her dolls that she had HIV/AIDS, and she was going to help her.

‘My mom thought at that point maybe they were talking a bit too much about global health at the dinner table,’ she said with a laugh.

Elite education, from private schools to doctor-in-training

Jennifer (pictured with her now-husband) graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in human biology in the spring of 2018.

Jennifer attended the competitive Lakeside School in Seattle, her father’s alma mater. It was at the private school that Bill discovered his passion for computers and met his Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

‘If there had been no Lakeside, there would have been no Microsoft,’ he shared in a speech he gave at the school in 2005.

‘The experience and insight Paul Allen and I gained here gave us the confidence to start a company based on this wild idea that nobody else agreed with — that computer chips were going to become so powerful that computers and software would become a tool that would be on every desk and in every home,’ he said.

All three of Bill’s children graduated from Lakeside, where tuition costs $40,080 for the 2022-2023 school year.

There is a rigorous application process for entry into the school’s 5th-12th grade program, which has an acceptance rate of just 17 percent, according to Private School Review.

However, considering Bill is an alum and one of the richest, most powerful men in the world, his children likely had no problem getting in.

Knowing that his children wouldn’t be receiving billion-dollar trust funds, he has prioritized their education to ensure they would be set up for success.

‘Our kids will receive a great education and some money so they are never going to be poorly off but they’ll go out and have their own career,’ he explained in 2016. ‘It’s not a favor to kids to have them have huge sums of wealth. It distorts anything they might do, creating their own path.’

After graduating from the Lakeside School, Jennifer attended Stanford University, where she balanced her weekday workload with her weekend horse shows as a competitive showjumper.

In a 2016 interview with Horse Network, she opened up about her major and interests.

‘I just took a class about children, youth, and the law, so we learned about the juvenile justice system, the foster care system, and all the issues surrounding that,’ she shared. ‘I’m really interested in children’s well-being, especially here in the United States. I find that fascinating.’

The heiress also spent three months studying marine biology in Australia before graduating from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in human biology in the spring of 2018.

Jennifer took a gap year to focus on competitive riding before enrolling at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, where she is currently studying.

The medical student, who hopes to one day specialize in pediatrics or primary care, admitted that she almost gave up on her dreams of being a doctor early on in her college career.

‘I really struggled through my first quarter of chemistry at Stanford, and I thought to myself, “I don’t think I’m cut out to be a doctor if I can’t learn this material,”‘ she recalled in a 2019 interview with the Horse Network.

Despite her initial lack of confidence in her abilities, she realized success wasn’t about her natural abilities but rather the work she was willing to put into her studies.

‘I changed into this growth mindset and thought, “I might not be good at this initially, but if I go to office hours every day, and do extra practice problems every day, and fully dedicate myself to this, then I can be successful,’ she said.

‘Chemistry is difficult and hard for many people (like myself) to understand at first — but I realized it is not that I wasn’t good enough, it was just going to take some extra effort to learn.’

Jennifer was planning her wedding and dealing with her parents’ high-profile divorce when she announced on Instagram in May 2021 that she was postponing her STEP 1 U.S. Medical Licensing Examination until the following year.

In the post, she quoted author Caroline Myss, writing, ‘Always go with the choice that scares you the most.’

The aspiring doctor explained that this wasn’t an easy decision for her to make because taking a pause goes against her nature.

‘Despite my instinct to keep working harder and push through to take this exam in June, my intuition was telling me to take a step back: I knew I needed to give myself a break to rest and recharge,’ she shared.

‘This wasn’t an easy choice, especially since I am so used to leaning into the hustle, but I feel good about it and am proud of how I found my way through this decision. I so appreciate the opportunity to adjust my plans as life unfolds, and am looking forward to slowing down a bit over the next couple weeks.’

Jennifer, who is in her third year of medical school, will likely be taking more time off when she welcomes her first child this year.

Jennifer fell in love with horseback riding at a young age, and it is a passion that she shares with her husband, Nayel, who is an Olympic showjumper.

She was six years old when she started taking lessons with her best friend, according to Evergate Stables, the equestrian training facility she founded in 2017.

With the support of her parents, the heiress started training as a showjumper and helped her team secure the silver medal at the 2016 North American Young Rider Championship and win the 2017 USEF U25 Series Championship.

Jennifer, who was a student at Stanford University at the time, represented the United States on Nations Cup teams in 2017 and 2018.

After she graduated from college, she took a year off from focus on her equestrian pursuits and earned multiple top-10 placings competing in prestigious Grand Prix events around the world.

Jennifer has also competed against some of the world’s most famous daughters, including Eve Jobs (daughter of the late Steve Jobs), Jessica Springsteen (daughter of Bruce Springsteen), Destry Alyn Spielberg (daughter of Steven Spielberg), and Georgina Bloomberg (daughter of billionaire Michael Bloomberg).

Since starting medical school in 2019, she has shifted her focus to her studies, but horseback riding will always be a part of her life.

‘I always knew that I was going to have one or two years to really focus on the horses before transitioning into this next phase of my professional life,’ she told the Horse Network in 2019.

I absolutely love the sport, but have always felt that I wanted to do something else as a primary career. I enjoy staying busy and pursuing things that I love. Horses will always be part of my life, but medical school will be my priority.’

Jennifer is also an avid reader, like her father. When she’s not studying or competing on the equestrian circuit, her favorite thing to do is curl up with a good book.

‘It’s such a nice break to get lost in a story (or escape from the day to day during these challenging times) and reset your mind,’ she wrote on Instagram in July 2020.

In the post, she shared some of her favorite books, including ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney and ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ by Delia Owens.

Jennifer posted a snapshot of another one of her book stacks in April 2022, saying she finished them the month before while on a research elective.

She called ‘Midnight Library’ by Matt Haig the ‘best fiction [she’s] read in a long time’ and Emily Ratajkowski’s memoir ‘My Body’ a ‘thought provoking take on women’s bodies in a patriarchal consumerist society.’

She also dubbed ‘Already Enough: A Path to Self-Acceptance’ by Lisa Olivera a ‘must-read,’ noting, ‘I really liked and would recommend all of these — I won’t finish a book if I don’t enjoy it!’

Jennifer and her husband, Nayel, met while competing internationally on the equestrian horse circuit. Their friendship eventually evolved into romance.

The couple, both Stanford graduates, officially started dating in January 2017. They celebrated their first Valentine’s Day together the following month.

Nayel marked the occasion on Instagram that February 14 by sharing a photo of their dinner date in Miami Beach, writing, ‘Lucky guy convincing this beauty to be my Valentine this year…’

The Egyptian-American equestrian was born in Chicago and raised in Kuwait. His millionaire parents, Fouad Nassar and Iman Harby, are the owners of the architectural firm Diwan Interiors International in Kuwait.

Nayel had a ‘wealthy upbringing’ and his parents bought him his first horse at the age of 10, according to Al Arabiya English. He returned to the U.S. at 18 to attend Stanford University in California, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 2013.

Nayel returned to Stanford in June 2018 to celebrate Jennifer’s graduation, and proudly shared photos of himself posing with her in her cap and gown.

A few years after they became a couple, she opened up about how their shared love of horses brought them together.

‘Horses are just one part of our life, but we love the sport,’ she told CNN’s EQ equestrian show in 2019. ‘He’s a professional, and I do this as an amateur. So, to be able to share our love and passion for horses with each other is just incredible.’

Nayel proposed to Jennifer on a ski trip in January 2020, three years after they started dating. When they announced the happy news on Instagram, they both shared photos of themselves kneeling in the snow after he popped the question.

‘Nayel Nassar, you are one of a kind,’ Jennifer wrote. ‘Absolutely swept me off my feet this past weekend, surprising me in the most meaningful location over one of our many shared passions. Jennifer married Nayel on Saturday, October 16, 2021, during a beautiful ceremony at her $15.82 million home in North Salem, New York — a 124-acre horse farm that was a college graduation gift from her billionaire parents.

It was Microsoft heiress’ second set of nuptials that weekend. She first tied the knot with the Olympic show jumper in a private religious Muslim ceremony the night before.

Friday night’s rehearsal dinner — which secretly served as a reception for the first ceremony — was held in the garden of the family’s 142-acre estate in Westchester County and catered by Jean-Georges.

Jennifer’s parents, Bill and Melinda, were seen mingling with guests at the dinner in their first appearance together since separating.

The couple, who had been married for 27 years, announced their split in May 2021 and finalized their divorce that August.

Melinda had reportedly been uncomfortable with her husband’s connection to Jeffrey Epstein, while Bill acknowledged that he’d had an extramarital affair with a Microsoft employee in 2000.

However, both of them set aside their differences and were there to walk Jennifer down the aisle on her big day.

The ceremony was performed by a longtime family friend, and the bride and groom wrote their own vows.

Following their ‘I dos,’ the couple made a quick getaway to have some private wedding photos taken on the estate, while guests headed into a specially constructed ‘botanical garden’ where the cocktail hour was held.

The reception began shortly after 4 p.m., and servers could be seen standing at the ready with celebratory glasses of champagne.

Guests were seen enjoying the evening on a specially constructed verandah before stray showers forced them back inside around 6 p.m.

The blushing bride changed into a second gown custom Vera Wang dress for the reception. The sleeveless gown featured a square neckline and hand appliqué French macrame lace on the skirt and straps.

Jennifer and Bill danced to Elton John’s ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight,’ while her first dance with her new husband was to ‘Yellow Lights,’ a song ‘which was written and performed by their friend and artist Harry Hudson,’ according to Vogue.

Coldplay also performed at the reception.

Saturday’s guest list mostly consists of friends and family, with few celebrities or politicians invited. Georgina Bloomberg, the daughter of billionaire Michael Bloomberg and a fellow professional equestrian, was in attendance with her husband and son.

The extravagant two-day event, costing an estimated $2 million, was orchestrated by famed wedding planner Marcy Blum, whose elite client list includes Kevin Bacon, LeBron James, and Billy Joel.

In an interview with Vogue, Jennifer said it was ‘no small feat’ to plan the wedding while she was in medical school rotations and Nayel was preparing for the Olympics, which he competed in for Egypt that year.

‘It’s been a challenging year, both collectively with the pandemic and for our families going through transitions,’ she explained. ‘But our love for one another has been a constant. Being able to celebrate our wedding with our closest friends and family was a dream come true.’

To keep from letting the stress get to them, they reminded themselves what their wedding was ultimately about their love for each other.

‘One piece of advice we were given [throughout the planning process] was to remember that this day is about us and our love,’ she shared. ‘I think we really kept that at the center of our minds while planning, and we also tried to ensure that our families and friends were able to enjoy themselves.’

Jennifer added that they required all 300 of their wedding guests to be vaccinated and take COVID tests in order to ensure everyone’s safety.

‘We made the decision that all guests must be fully vaccinated and receive a negative test result prior to the wedding. We also made masks available,’ she explained.

‘We feel incredibly fortunate to be able to gather with our loved ones safely. We know others aren’t as lucky, especially as the pandemic continues to devastate communities in the United States and around the world.’

Before she received her diploma, her parents dropped $5 million on a condo at 1212 Fifth Ave in New York City, the New York Post reported that year.

The 2,389 square-foot residence in East Harlem, which once belonged to Carmelo and La La Anthony, boasts views of Central Park and three bedrooms, including a primary with a spa-style ensuite bathroom.

Bill purchased the condo in December 2017 through a trust administered through Watermark Estate Management Services LLC, which he reportedly uses for his personal and family matters.

It was later revealed that Jennifer would be living in the condo while attending the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, which is just blocks away.

After she graduated, the equestrian was gifted a 124-acre horse farm in North Salem, New York, where she later got married.

Jennifer took a year off after college to focus on her riding before attending medical school and likely spent a great deal of time at the property in Westchester County, which consists of three adjoining parcels.

Bill listed his daughter’s New York City apartment for $4.75 million in December 2022, following her baby news.

Hamilton sold it in 2021 after four years of ownership but never even moved in. It sold for slightly more than its $49.5 million list price.

The three-level apartment has six bedrooms, six baths, two powder rooms, 20-foot-high ceilings, multiple terraces, and two parking spaces.

It has its own elevator, and on the top level, dual terraces flank an additional penthouse living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, according to an old property listing.

The apartment’s main terrace overlooks northwest Tribeca and the Hudson River and has its own outdoor swimming pool.

The building on 443 Greenwich Street includes a 70-foot indoor swimming pool and Turkish baths as well as a 5,000-square-foot communal roof terrace.

Other celebrities to have lived in the building include Jennifer Lawrence, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Reynolds, Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, and The Weeknd.
