Instagram adds hilarious new ‘Superzoom’ feature

It’s been years since the so-called ‘Dramatic Chipmunk’ video first went viral, seeing a prairie dog abruptly turn toward the camera just before it zooms in for an uncomfortably close look.

But, the zooming trend lives on.

Instagram has unveiled a new ‘Superzoom’ feature, which allows users to capture short videos that automatically zoom in on the subject – and, they’re set to dramatic sound effects.

The firm revealed the new feature today, alongside a slew of Halloween-inspired face filters and stickers that will be available until November 1.

Superzoom now appears under the record button once you open to the camera; just scroll through the existing options, such as Live and Boomerang, to see it.

Then, you can record either a 3-second Superzoom video by tapping record, or a longer video by holding the button.

The videos can be added to your Story, or sent to friends in a direct message.

Earlier this week, the firm unveiled another update to the app – you can now ‘Go Live’ with your friends, allowing you to create live broadcasts with multiple people.

Videos created with the Go Live With feature can be saved to your phone, or shared with followers on your story.

It is part of an expansion into live video that Facebook, which owns Instagram , hopes will allow the app to keep up with competition from the likes of Snapchat .

The feature was first tested back in August with a small percentage of its users.

The Go Live With icon appears on the app in the bottom right hand corner of the screen once you begin streaming a live video to your followers.

Guests can be added to the session for camera-to-camera chats.

Once they join, users will see the screen split into two and friends will pop up right below.

And friends can follow the conversation with their own messages and emoji.

At the beginning of this month, Instagram added a new ‘Polls’ feature to Stories, which allow your followers to weigh in on your everyday dilemmas.

HOW TO GO LIVE WITH FRIENDS

To add a guest while you’re broadcasting, simply tap the new icon on the bottom right.

Then press ‘Add’ to invite anyone who’s currently watching.

Once they join, you’ll see the screen split into two and your friend pop up right below you.

Your viewers can still like and comment as they follow along.

You can remove your guest and add someone else at any time, or they can also choose to exit on their own.

Share your live video to stories when your broadcast has ended, or choose ‘Discard’ and your live video will disappear from the app as usual.

The interactive poll sticker lets you ask a question and present two options atop a photo or video – then, once the poll is live, your followers can start voting.

The update comes alongside new tools geared toward a more ‘creative’ experience, including a color-matching tool for text, and an alignment tool for text and stickers.

Instagram’s new polling feature is now available for iOS and Android.

Like other stickers in the app, it can be dragged right onto a photo or video and placed wherever you’d like.

INSTAGRAM ADDS LIVE FACE FILTERS

  1. To use face filters in a live video, tap the face icon in the bottom right corner before or during a broadcast.
  2. Tap any filter to check out a new look and try out the filter.
  3. When the broadcast has ended, a replay can be shared to your story, or you can choose ‘Discard’ and the live video will disappear from the app as usual.

The questions and options are customizable, and results update in real time.

Followers will see your poll when they view your story, and can cast their own vote to reveal which choice is in the lead.

To see the votes yourself, just swipe up, and the full list will be shown.

Instagram has also added a color picker for text, which will use an eyedropper symbol to choose any color from a photo, and apply it to text or a drawing.

For iOS, users will also be shown a blue alignment tool to help you center your stickers.
