The previously inflexible carousel feature that allows Instagram users to share multiple photos in one post has finally been updated to support more formats.
Starting today, users can choose landscape and portrait modes when sharing multiple photos and videos using the carousel option that lets others swipe to see additional photos.
While Instagram has long supported landscape and portrait-style media for regular posts, it only allowed square images for the popular carousel option until now.

However, there are still some restrictions – each photo in the post must be in the same format.
‘Now, when uploading your photos and videos, you’ll have more creative flexibility with the ability to share in landscape and portrait formats,’ the announcement reads.
‘To keep the experience smooth and consistent, however, all photos and videos in your post must be shared in the same format.’
This means that while users are no longer restricted to square images for carousel posts, they must choose to go either all square, all landscape, or all portrait.
The new feature is being rolled out today as part of Instagram version 12 for iOS in the Apple App Store and for Android in Google Play.

To use the new feature, first make sure your app is updated.
Then start a gallery-style post and choosing up to ten photos you want to share.
Like with regular posts, you’ll be able to pinch in on the photo to change it from square to landscape or portrait.
But once you choose a style, the app will only let you resize the others to the style of the first one.
The announcement also mentions other carousel updates that have already been rolled out in recent weeks, such as the ability to edit tagged people after you’ve posted and the option to can save posts as drafts.
You can then write captions and location tags apply to the entire set of content – filters and edits can be added individually.

A new Go Live With icon will appear on the app for the chosen few in the bottom right hand corner of the screen once you begin streaming live video to your followers.
Guests can be added to the session for camera to camera chats.
And friends can follow the conversation with their own messages and emojis.
The feature will be rolling out globally over the next few months.
A spokesman for Instagram said: ‘Live video helps people connect with their friends and followers in the moment and in an authentic way, but sometimes it can be intimidating when you’re on your own.
‘With this update, users will be able to bring in a guest to go live with them and follow along as friends like and comment.
‘We’re currently testing this with a small percentage of users and will continue to improve the experience as we roll it out to everyone over the coming months.’
To add a guest while you’re broadcasting, simply tap the new icon on the bottom right.
Then press ‘Add’ to invite anyone who’s currently watching.
Once they join, you’ll see the screen split into two and your friend pop up right below you.
Your viewers can still like and comment as they follow along.
You can remove your guest and add someone else at any time, or they can also choose to exit on their own.
Share your live video to stories when your broadcast has ended, or choose ‘Discard’ and your live video will disappear from the app as usual.
