Instagram tests new ‘follows you’ labels for Android users

Since Instagram first launched, it’s remained a tedious task to figure out if someone has discreetly unfollowed you.

With no notification when it happens, Instagrammers instead have to scroll through their followers list to see if that person – often an ex – is still on there.

But, Instagram now appears to be introducing a much easier solution.

Some Android users have discovered a new ‘follows you’ label beneath their followers’ bios, Mashable reports.

INSTAGRAM ADDS LIVE FACE FILTERS

  1. To use face filters in a live video, tap the face icon in the bottom right corner before or during a broadcast.
  2. Tap any filter to check out a new look and try out the filter.
  3. When the broadcast has ended, a replay can be shared to your story, or you can choose ‘Discard’ and the live video will disappear from the app as usual.

The new feature means you’ll instantly know whether or not someone has unfollowed you just by looking at their profile.

As of now, the ‘follows you’ update hasn’t become available to all Android users, according to Mashable.

And, it hasn’t yet made its way to iOS 11.

Android owners who have received the update, however, appear to be overjoyed with the new feature, with many suggesting it was long overdue.

The latest update comes just days after the firm teased another change to the platform – but, in that case, users were far less excited.

Frustrated Instagrammers took to social media this week to reveal their grid has suddenly switched from its long-standing 3-by-3 layout to now include a fourth column of photos.

For the average user, the change may seem minor – but, for artists, influencers, and other people who plan their posts around the aesthetic of the grid itself, the update could ruin their carefully curated profiles.

On Twitter, outraged Instagram users have begun to report changes to their grid, with some even claiming the update could go so far as to drive some away from the platform.

‘Literally no one wants the 4 grid Instagram change,’ one user tweeted.

‘Listen to your users @instagram this might be the beginning of your end.’

‘If Instagram changes to a 4 column grid I’m gonna need a therapist,’ another wrote.

While it appears Instagram may be testing the feature for some, it’s unclear if the update will roll out universally in the future.

In a statement to Dailymail.com, a spokesperson for Instagram did not address whether the feature will become available for everyone, instead commenting, ‘We’re always testing ways to improve the Instagram experience.’

For some, the change didn’t appear to be permanent yet.

‘Anyone else’s Instagram keep changing to a 4 pic grid then back to a 3?’ one user asked on Twitter.

Another simply tweeted: ‘4 column grid on Instagram?? NOOO’.

It’s not the only controversial change brought to light this week.

In a new update, Instagram will autoplay videos with the sound off and give you the option to turn it on for the rest of your session.

Once you make this choice, however, the app will remember your decision until you next close it, which means all future videos will play with the sound on.

Instagram confirmed the new feature in an email to TechCrunch.

AUTOPLAY OUTRAGE

Not all users are impressed by the changes.

Wrting on Twitter, user @NfamousKaye said: ‘Am I the only one who hates that videos autoplay on Instagram now?’

‘If I wanted a jumpscare I’d go to YouTube for that.’

@Tasha26 added: ‘I wonder if there is a sinister side to Autoplay, as in to rig click metrics & con advertisers that lots of users actually click on videos.’

@iElmedin said: ‘Instagram with autoplay and sound-on for all videos – SUCKS!!!’

And, not everyone is happy with the change.

When you load Instagram, videos will still autoplay with the sound off by default.

But a speaker icon will appear in the bottom left hand corner of videos, giving you the option of switching them on.

Switch this off again will toggle sounds off for the rest of your session.

When you close the app, it will reset to autoplay audio off the next time you open it.

Instagram Stories videos will continue to use your device’s sound profile settings to decide whether to play sounds.

So if your phone is set to silent, it will keep sounds muted, but if your device is switched to sounds on it will play the Snapchat clone-style slideshows with audio enabled.

Tech Crunch believes the move could be a big benefit to businesses and advertisers.

The changes could mean more of their videos will now be played with the sound on.

This will make Instagram more like television or Snapchat where sound always plays, and could encourage spending on video advertising.
