Instructor, 29, launches NUDE yoga classes for women of all ages, shapes and sizes

Jessa O’Brien is no stranger to getting naked.

The self-dubbed ‘Nude Blogger’ regularly shares photographs of herself nude on her Instagram page in a variety of yoga positions – whether she’s at the beach, on a tennis court or just practising her poses at home.

But now, the 29-year-old yoga devotee has taken things one step further, by launching her first ever nude yoga workshop in Brisbane last weekend.

Jessa hosted a naked class on Saturday evening for women of all ages, shapes and sizes and told FEMAIL ‘we came as strangers but left as sisters’.

In the three-hour ’empowering celebration of our naked bodies, honouring you and all of your divinity’, Jessa said it was all about getting naked ‘both physically and metaphysically’.

‘There were tears, laughter, silence and joy,’ Jessa told Daily Mail Australia. ‘It was a hugely humbling experience and I feel so honoured to have had the opportunity to hold such a sacred space for these ladies to shed their physical and emotional layers.’

The 29-year-old said that while there was some nervousness among her guests at the start, they soon ‘stepped outside of their comfort zone and expanded their self-awareness.

‘By the time the end of the workshop rolled about, many of them said they had forgotten they were naked,’ Jessa laughed.

Speaking about the class (pictured) beforehand, Jessa said: '[It will be] a serene evening spent journeying through the form and formless, it is a gentle facilitation into vulnerability... through an alchemical integration of yoga, meditation, breath work, mantras and affirmations'

The classes last three hours and are conducted by candlelight

Besides increasing self-confidence, Jessa said there are many benefits to nude yoga.

She said the practice can even help you to feel more empowered in all areas of your life:

‘These workshops are really a space and opportunity to delve deeper into our vulnerability and identify any negative thought patterns that are keeping us from feeling self-conscious, insecure, worthless or powerless,’ she explained.

‘I watched some amazing transformations take place during the class. There were tears, laughter, silence and joy.’

‘[It will be] a serene evening spent journeying through the form and formless, it is a gentle facilitation into vulnerability, self-acceptance, truth and union as you’re guided through an alchemical integration of yoga, meditation, breath work, mantras and affirmations,’ she explained beforehand.

‘Held in a safe and honouring space to help you feel supported and nurtured, I invite you to allow yourself permission to surrender. It is about undressing and addressing our body image woes through the shedding of layers (physically and emotionally).’

It wasn’t just the instructor who felt the benefits of the class, either.

Other women shared with FEMAIL how they found the nude yoga workshop.

Catrina, who booked on the spot, said: ‘When I walked in, the whole vibe was right. Jessa was completely unpretentious and genuine. The space was warmly lit by candlelight and it quickly dimmed my fears of my privacy being compromised by my nakedness in a room full of strangers.

‘Disrobing came at a time when only I was comfortable, and not rushed or pressured into it. It balanced privacy and exposure so beautifully, creating a safe space in and of itself.

‘And so the evening commenced, and I knew it was the right place for me.’

'What I gained was the forgiveness that I've owed myself and my body for almost 15 years, and now I have the opportunity to see myself and my body in a different light,' one woman said of the workshop

Why naked yoga?

‘As a practicing yogi and qualified yoga teacher, I have come to understand that yoga is a journey through which we learn to reconnect with our inner light of awareness. For me, it has been a path of positive transformation spanning the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Teaching yoga is a way for me to help facilitate this inward journey. It is a form of guidance through which I am able to help inspire others to rediscover and strengthen this mind-body-heart-soul connection.

‘The naked aspect of the workshop is about identifying and breaking through our warped views of the human body that may be associated with and rooted in shame, sexuality, or vulgarity. Being involved in the nudist movement has helped me to differentiate between sexual and non-sexual nudity, something a lot of our society is yet to understand. A part of my cause is to help others to see and experience nudity in a non-sexual aspect and within a non-judgmental environment. I have set out to help others, especially females, to embrace our natural physical form, because it is our birthright as sovereign beings!

‘The connection of breath and movement in the physical practice of yoga helps us to cultivate this mind-body connection that is so vital to being body-positive.’

Another woman, Lahnee, said: ‘The workshop was beautifully done, it opened my eyes and heart to the raw beauty of the naked form as well as how important self love and acceptance is.

‘Being surrounded by so many incredible ladies was such a pleasure and even though were strangers, by the end of the night we felt like old friends.’

Finally, Sonia added: ‘I don’t have enough words to express the gratitude to you for holding an amazing workshop and space for us ladies to gather and let our shields down.

‘What I gained was the forgiveness that I’ve owed myself and my body for almost 15 years, and now I have the opportunity to see myself and my body in a different light.’
