Interior design experts share their top six tips for creating timeless style in your home including embracing greenery and house plants to add color and improve air quality

1. Complete the scene with greens

House plants were a rising trend while people were locked in their homes during the pandemic and Ms. Wilson said they are here to stay.

Incorporating plants and greenery into the home is a timeless way of adding color to the home plus they have been proven to improve indoor air quality.

‘Greenery, both the color and plants, is going nowhere, as biophilic design, incorporating plants into interiors, continues to be a focus of designers and wellbeing experts,’ she said.

‘There is a plant for everyone, from those that require minimum effort to those who need daily attention, so do some research to find out what’s best for you. The plant pots themselves can also be a good way to add some color or pattern.’

2. Balance trend with timelessness

When thinking about a new look for a room, Mr. Warren said it’s a good idea to blend new trends with timeless centerpieces to minimize the risk of the style looking dated in the future.

‘When it comes to elevating the desired look or feel in your bedroom, the bed is a key feature to focus on, with this naturally taking center stage,’ he said.

‘When considering the best bed for your space, ensure to choose one which supports your ever-evolving style by providing a timeless canvas.’

‘Wooden beds are an ideal option to give the room a touch of tradition whilst keeping things versatile. If you lean towards more modern trends, opt for a rattan bed frame to introduce some more playful texture.’

Kmart Australia’s range of rattan furniture, including their stylish bed heads, is an affordable option for having an on-trend centerpiece for your bedroom.

3. Reuse and recycle

‘Interior design trends are constantly changing and evolving. But at the same time, the interiors industry is becoming increasingly focused on sustainability, so whilst you may be keen to jump on the latest trends, there are ways to do so without overconsuming,’ Ms. Ackroyd said.

‘There is a continuing effort to encourage us to buy less, shop vintage, and do our bit to be more mindful and conscious consumers,’ Ms. Wilson added.

‘This doesn’t mean we can’t buy anything new, but consider selling old furniture and buying second hand. Also, take a look at the things in your home and see if you can upcycle them rather than simply buying something new.’

DIY expert, Geneva Vanderzeil, from Brisbane, recently upcycled a plain floor lamp and gave it a stylish transformation using old bottles, plaster, and white paint.

How to make Geneva Vanderzeil’s upcycled bobble floor lamp

What you’ll need?

  1. An old floor lamp
  2. Around 15 empty soft drink bottles depending on the size of your lamp
  3. Masking tape

What to do?

  1. Cut the top third off the soft drink bottles with scissors and slice down the side of each bottle’s top
  2. Neatly cut the screw necks off the bottle tops
  3. Remove the shade from the lamp and place the bottle tops onto the lamp base and repeat with the other bottles in alternating directions
  4. Taped and secured each of the bottle tops together with masking tape to create rounded, diamond-like shapes
  5. Once the lamp post is full of bottle tops give the base and bottles a coat of white paint
  6. After the paint has dried, apply a layer of plaster onto the bottles to create a seamless look and allow them to dry
  7. Once the plaster is dry, use sandpaper to sand the surface until smooth and reattached the lampshade

4. Switch up soft furnishings

Changing up accessories like cushions, throws, bed linen, towels, and bath mats is a great way to embrace trendy colors without doing a full style revamp, Ms. Ackroyd said.

‘For the bedroom, I’d suggest investing in high-quality bed linen in a timeless neutral shade, then contrasting cushions and throws in varying textures, complementary colors, and different shapes and sizes for a stylish look that’s easy to update with changes in trends,’ she said.

‘The same can be said for updating your bathroom – a new bath mat and towels colorway can transform the room completely. Deep greens and chocolate browns are having a real moment and these can make a bathroom feel super cozy and relaxing.’

Ms Wilson said adding pattern to a room through fabrics on blinds, curtains, and cushions is a great way to incorporate the latest trends to your space in a limited scale

Be bold with a pattern

Ms. Wilson said adding patterns to a room through fabrics on blinds, curtains, and cushions is a great way to incorporate the latest trends into your space on a limited scale.

‘Pattern trends develop and evolve each year, with pattern clash and geometric shapes seeing increased popularity this year,’ she said.

‘Checkerboard patterns are making a comeback and stripes have got broader and brighter. There are some stunning patterned fabrics out there that will elevate your décor.’

While colours are very seasonal and different shades and tones become popular each year, Ms Wilson said there are safe and stylish colour schemes that last the test of time

Keep it classic

While colors are very seasonal and different shades and tones become popular each year, Ms. Wilson said there are safe and stylish color schemes that last the test of time.

‘Bold colors and color blocks continue to be a popular paint effect, and can be achieved by anyone with a steady hand and a roll of masking tape,’ she said.

‘The Pantone color of the year, Very Peri, is bold and contemporary and has been seen in a variety of color clash versions.’

She said those who don’t want to commit to painting can embrace color with cushions, curtains, blinds, and rugs.
