Interior designer expert reveals the tiny detail which makes your house look and feel much more expensive

An interior design expert has revealed how to make your home look and feel more expensive – without breaking the bank or renovating.

Nicholas Holmes is a Home Decorator and Furniture Buyer for Kmart Australia and told FEMAIL how to achieve a ‘luxe for less’ look.

Rather than buying new curtains or a rug, the 38-year-old from Melbourne encouraged Aussies to add an ‘unexpected’ touch of colour.

‘Don’t be afraid to try a colour that isn’t currently in the space,’ he explained.

‘Test it in something small, something like the Kmart lilac side table. An unexpected moment of colour makes a space feel really designed.’

Once starting off, you can expand further into the area – but Mr Holmes said to begin in smaller spaces.

He also shared two other ways to make create a designer space using furniture and décor items.

‘Layer – if you just focus on a small space, layering that area will make it more impactful than spreading out a number of items,’ he said.

Rather than buying new curtains or adding a rug, Nicholas Holmes recommends adding an ‘unexpected’ touch of colour, such as a side table or lamp (stock image)

‘Investing in three cushions instead of three random items is an impactful way to update a space,’ he continued.

Mr Holmes also recommended playing with ‘high shine finishes’, such as shiny products.

‘We’ve got a lot of ceramics coming through glassware and reflective surfaces, which adds that element of something special into a space and makes it feel really high,’ he said.

Kmart Australia is set to launch a range of stunning new wine glasses, lamps and kitchen essentials later this month as part of the August Living range.

Customers can get their hands on the latest products online and in store from July 25.

The collection features trend-driven rugs, mirrors, chairs, and small décor items.

‘With this launch we’ve been bolder and braver in colour. We’ve also given every type of customer something new – there’s something for everyone,’ Mr Holmes said.

The budget retailer is also set to bring back a range of popular items, including the Gigi Floor Lamp which went viral and sold out earlier this year.
