Mahonri Schwalger has resigned as coach of the Samoa men’s rugby team while facing serious criminal charges.

Samoa Rugby Union chairman Tuilaepa Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi confirmed on Tuesday that Schwalger’s resignation was accepted by the full board of the organisation.

Schwalger was suspended in September after he was officially charged with unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault and common assault.

He has been bailed to appear in court on April 28.

‘This resignation follows a period of suspension granted to (Schwalger) following the filing of criminal charges against him in court,’ Malielegaoi said in a statement posted on social media.
