INXS manager Chris Murphy has died aged 66 after a short battle with cancer.
The legendary music manager, who helped steer INXS to global success, was surrounded by family when he died at home in Ballina, northern NSW, on Saturday.
‘It is with great sadness that the remaining members of INXS mourn the passing of our brother, Chris Murphy,’ band members Tim, Jon and Andrew Farriss, Kirk Pengilly and Garry Beers said in a statement.
‘Without Chris’s vision, passion and hard work, the INXS story would be totally different.’
The talented manager, who was also a record-label owner and TV producer, was just 16 years old when he joined his mother to run a theatrical agency called MMA in 1970.
He pivoted the business to book tours for rock acts.
He also pioneered a contract called the ‘door deal’ which guarantees artists a percentage of the cover charge, increasing their earnings.
Mr Murphy was diagnosed with a fast-moving cancer before Christmas.
He died at his home, Sugar Bay Ranch, in Ballina, on Saturday.
