Irish bride makes slang translator for US wedding guests

  • Kyle Merber, from New York, married Patricia Barry, from Ireland, last week
  • Pair wanted friends from both countries to get along despite ‘language barrier’
  • So they created a helpful and hilarious translation sheet, that has gone viral
  • Irish phrase ‘Who is your one? Is she doing a line with your man?’ translates to ‘Who is that hot chick? I wonder if she’s dating that dude?’ in American English

While many Americans might like to claim a little Irish blood in their veins, the country’s culture and especially accent can often leave people baffled.

Which is why New Yorker Kyle Merber decided to create a handy translation guide when he married Irish bride Patricia Barry last week.

The hilarious sheet, which was handed out to guests at their wedding in Tipperary last Saturday, has since gone viral – attracting tens of thousands of views online.

Irish bride Patricia Barry created a translator to help out friends of her American groom Kyle Merber when the pair tied the knot in Tipperary last week

Kyle posted this image of the translator on Twitter, saying: 'Placed these on the tables yesterday. Wish I had this when we started dating!'

Below is a list of eight wedding-specific phrases as they would be said in Irish, along with how they would sound in American.

Examples include ‘Jaysus that speech was gas, he was absolutely brilliant. What a legend!’ which becomes ‘Omg that speech was sweet, he crushed it. So epic!’

‘Who is your one? Is she doing a line with your man?’ in Irish translates to ‘Who is that hot chick? I wonder if she’s dating that dude?’

And for the sports fans, ‘Up Tipp! Gwarn Tipp!’ becomes ‘Let’s go Yankees!’

After the wedding the pair flew to Switzerland for a week while they enjoyed their honeymoon, according to posts on Kyle’s Instagram.

He wrote: ‘The honeymoon phase is over! We had enough fondue, chocolate, wine and stunning mountain views to hold us over for a while.

‘Thanks again to our friends and family for making last week so special.’
