Irish man ‘killed by his fiancee’ had violent history

An Irish carpenter stabbed in the neck was breaching an AVO when he broke in to his fiancee’s apartment and passed out drunk on the couch.

David Walsh, 29, was allegedly being hunted by police for glassing someone at a Randwick pub just hours before breaking in to Cathrina Ann Cahill’s apartment in Padstow, in south-west Sydney, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Mr Walsh reportedly flew into a jealous rage after he awoke in the early hours of February 18 to find that Ms Cahill and her friends had brought a 36-year-old Revesby man home from the pub with them.

The jealous rage allegedly turned physical, with Mr Walsh climbing on top of the man and hitting him before Ms Cahill intervened.

During the scuffle, Mr Walsh, a father of three, was stabbed in the neck, causing a wound which led to his death.

Mr Walsh’s children are from an earlier relationship, and the Daily Telegraph reports he had left Ireland with Ms Cahill in 2013, with existing assault charges against him.

Mr Walsh was accused of assaulting three police officers, the mother of his children, and two men from his hometown of Enniscorthy.

By being drunk and breaking in to Ms Cahill’s apartment, it is reported Mr Walsh was in breach of an apprehended violence order taken out against him.

Hours before his death, Mr Walsh was allegedly being sought by police for glassing someone at the Coach and Horses Hotel in Sydney’s east.

On the same night, it is further alleged he had sent photographs of knives and other intimidating texts to the Ms Cahill. The pair had got engaged just weeks earlier.

Shortly after his death, friends and family of Mr Walsh expressed their devastation.

‘The town of Enniscorthy is numbed by this tragedy. He was a respected and talented young gentleman who worked in the building trade,’ Enniscorthy councillor John O’Rourke told The Independent.ie.

‘David grew up in Moran Park in the town, the son of highly respected builder John Walsh and his wife Anna. He was one of six children.’
