Airports are notoriously expensive – but this one may be the dearest in the world, selling beer for €17.50 (£15), Big Macs for €21.50 (£18.50), and even bananas at €6 (£5) a pop.

Visited by 220,000 passengers every day, Istanbul Airport has been dubbed the ‘most expensive airport in the world’ by travellers who’ve been spotting outrageous prices on food and drink.

A writer from Italian news website L’Economia, Leonard Berberi revealed when he visited the Turkey airport he saw a lasagna – weighing just 90 grams – sitting in a fridge, being sold for a whopping €24.50 (£21).

He added: ‘It looks more like a piece of brick with a sprinkling of what looks like grated cheese and a pseudo-basil leaf.’

The tourist also found some savoury croissants being sold for €14.50 (£12.50) to €17.50 depending on the filling, Italian chicken salads for €17.50, and beer was extortionate.

While he’d enjoyed a half-litre bottle of Efes, Turkey’s most popular beer, for €1.50 (£1.28) in Taksim Square the previous day, Leonard was now being forced to cough up €17.50 in the airport – an increase of 1,067 per cent.

Leonard also ventured around the airport’s many fast food joints and things weren’t much better.

At Popeyes, four fried chicken wings with Coca-Cola and French fries cost €17.50. At McDonald’s, a Big Mac cost €21.50, while the Double Quarter Pounder menu was €25.30 (£21.65).

Meanwile, Burger King was charging €22 (£19) for a Whopper.

Leonard isn’t the only holidaymaker to have noted Istanbul Airport’s outrageous prices.

On Reddit, many travellers have complained about how expensive it is, with one even claiming they paid €6 for a banana.

Unluckily for the airport, it was also revealed to be one of the world’s most likely airports for passengers to have their luggage go missing earlier today.
