Is this the worst footy jumper EVER? Fans lash out at the AFL’s special Gather Round strip

  • AFL’s Gather Round footy jumper has been widely panned
  • Features all 18 clubs, many fans believe it is an eyesore
  • NRL also guilty of some kit howlers over the years

Footy fans have slammed the AFL for the league’s specially designed Gather Round strip – with supporters queueing up to label it an absolute eyesore.

The jumper – and a beanie and scarf – featured the colours and logos of all 18 AFL clubs as they play every game of round four in Adelaide.

Veteran sports journalist Mark Gottlieb led the pile -on, declaring on X: ‘If this is a real jumper for sale, it is easily the worst piece of AFL merchandise I have ever seen.

‘I would rather jump off a cliff than wear that.’

‘Love that the designer just ranked the teams on the jumper alphabetically and went home,’ another fan posted sarcastically in response.

Yeah, we know Alfie. It's an outrage the Broncos had to wear this teal monstrosity twice - in 1998 then again in 2002

‘Real ‘marketing student intern’ vibes with this one,’ said another.

Questionable playing strips in the AFL seem to go hand in hand.

The Brisbane Bears strip of 1988, West Coast’s 2000 hypercolour guernsey with an ‘artistic’ eagle and Hawthorn’s ‘Power Ranger’ get up in 2015 spring to mind when the subject of horror Aussie Rules guernseys comes up.

But before NRL fans start giggling, their code is equally guilty of producing some shockers.

Penrith won the premiership in 2003, but their green away strip was a monstrosity – as was Brisbane’s teal number from 1998 – and then again, in 2002 before fans pleaded for the torture to end.

Incredibly, the club decided to bring it back in 2017 for the Nines tournament.
