The 30-year-old journalist wrote: ‘I never thought I would say this… I’m not proud to be Australian at the moment, considering the mindset of the government and the majority of the people living inside the country. I’m sorry.’

It comes as 80 per cent of people in NSW are living under stay-at-home orders, with 6.6 million in the state under lockdown.

Coronavirus spot fires have flared up from Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers to the Hunter Valley region and even in vulnerable outback communities in the north-west.

With the virus having already taken hold in Sydney’s south-west and west, Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned the city’s outbreak is threatening to move back eastwards after an increase in cases in Bayside and the inner-west – as well as areas hundreds of kilometres from the state capital.

Ms Berejiklian has said she is willing to ease restrictions in low-risk suburbs once six million jabs have been administered across the state.

Meanwhile, Melbourne’s lockdown was extended by another week on Wednesday after Victoria recorded 20 new cases of the virus.

On Thursday, Canberra also recorded three new cases of Covid, just hours after it was announced the city would enter a snap seven-day lockdown.
