Red balloons have been popping up in storm drains and sewer grates across Sydney without explanation.
People took to Twitter on Monday morning to post photos of the random balloons which cropped up across the New South Wales capital city overnight.
‘Second time I’ve seen a random red balloon floating around outside?’ one woman said seemingly confused.
The balloons were accompanied by a caption reading: ‘It is closer than you think’.

‘I just saw a red balloon attached to the drain, that’s f***ed,’ another said.
While the balloons were shrouded in secrecy, some quick thinking posters made a link between the balloons and the upcoming release of the movie ‘It’.
‘IT is coming soon,’ one man posted alongside a photo of a red balloon attached to a drain in Kings Cross, in the city’s centre.
‘This is out the front of my work! It Movie,’ another said.

‘Creepy and clever marketing for the new It movie this morning in Sydney,’ one man said
In the story, the red balloon means the clown is close by and is used to lure in a victim
The movie is an American horror film based on Sephen King’s 1986 novel ‘It’, in which a clown called Pennywise terrorises a small town.
