Donald Trump said his teleprompter went out during his Fourth of July address, which is why he said the Revolutionary Army under George Washington was able to conquer ‘airports’ in the 1700s.
‘We had a lot of rain. I stood in the rain. The teleprompter went out,’ the president told reporters at the White House on Friday.
‘At the end, it just went out. It went kaput,’ he said, adding that it happened ‘actually right in the middle of that sentence it went out.’

President Trump went on to say it wasn’t a ‘good feeling’ when that happened but he’s such a good speaker he was able to make do.
‘That’s not a good feeling. When you’re standing in front of millions of millions of people on television,’ he said.
‘I usually speak very well. I was able to do without a teleprompter,’ he noted.
And he added: ‘It was actually hard to look at anyway because it was raining all over.’
Trump rewrote history during his speech Thursday evening at the Lincoln Memorial when he made the ‘airports’ claim.

‘In June of 1775, the Continental Congress created a uniform army out of the revolutionary forces outside of Boston and New York and named after the great George Washington, commander in chief,’ Trump said in his speech.
He was already starting off on an inaccurate front as the continental army was named after the Continental Congress and not Washington – who did serve as commander in chief.

Trump continued: ‘The continental Army suffered a bitter winter of Valley Forge, found glory across the waters of the Delaware and seized victory from Cornwallis at Yorktown.’
But his biggest snafu came when Trump combined three historical events: the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and when planes were invented in the 20th century.

Trump appeared to conflate the continental army’s revolutionary campaign with the invention of the airplane by the Wright brothers in the early 1900s. The first airport didn’t exist until 1928, more than 150 years after the initial period Trump spoke about.
His next factual inaccuracy came when Trump suggested that the continental army had been the deciding factor in winning the battle at Fort McHenry.
The only problem with that statement is that Fort McHenry was the site of the Battle of Baltimore and the War of 1812 – decades after the continental was disbanded in 1783.
