Italy – look away now! In Sweden they love putting BANANAS on pizzas… and the internet doesn’t know what to make of it. Would YOU try it?

Italians, you may not be able to look at the photography in this story.

Because we’ve pictured a pizza that’s hugely popular in Sweden – one that’s topped with bananas.

Swedes’ love of banana pizzas has been around for a while, but the Internet only cottoned on to this quirky culinary trend relatively recently, and it’s been left baffled.

Sweden’s popular banana pizza has divided the Internet – would you try it?

While there’s no official date as to when the bizarre pizza was introduced in Sweden, it’s thought to have originated in the 1960s.

After WWII, Swedes developed an interest in Polynesian flavours, including banana and pineapple. In 1960s Sweden, it became fairly common to serve banana with ham for dinner. This passion for fruity flavours in savoury dishes led to banana casseroles, curries and the now ubiquitous banana pizza.

Professor Tellström, a food historian at Stockholm University, told Smithsonian Magazine that the pizza is ‘probably related to a search for exoticism that takes place after the war in Europe’.

Thought that fruity topping was as crazy as it can get? It gets even more bananas.

The Swedish banana pizza is usually flavoured with curry powder and topped with ham and pineapple.

Reddit user ‘0hip’ who tried the pizza says: ‘Turns out it’s really good. The banana loses some of its sweetness and caramelises and with the curry it works out great.’

But X user ‘@bananatkk’ says the banana pizza was ‘probably top three worst thing I ever tried in my life’.

X user ‘@anastasia_KVL’ says: ‘Controversial opinion: Swedish banana curry pizza is not that bad! Best part of it is letting go of accepting other people’s opinion and trying stuff.’

Other unconventional pizzas in Sweden include the ‘Kebabpizza’, usually topped with doner meat, kebab sauce and salad, and the seafood pizza, topped with shrimp and mussels.
