Lydia West has discussed balancing work and family life after recently welcoming her first child.

The It’s A Sin actress, 30, revealed in March she had become a mother and that life is ‘so different now’.

In a new interview with Cosmopolitan UK, Lydia discussed juggling parenthood with her role in the new Channel 4 show Big Mood.

‘I’ve always wanted a family,’ she said. ‘For our generation, it’s so hard. We have to be career-minded.

‘It’s amazing that women have so many opportunities now, but you do feel like you have to make a choice. Do you focus on your family? Or your career?’

The actress has not revealed if her child is a boy or girl or if she had her baby with a partner.

Big Mood, which also stars Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan, follows best friends Maggie and Eddie whose friendship is tested after Maggie is diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

With filming for the series finished, Lydia insisted she’s happy to spend some quality time with her baby before finding another project.

‘I’m happy to spend time with my little family until a potential season two,’ she said.

Lydia also discussed her friendships with her co-stars and how important it is for them to discuss how much they’ve been paid for acting gigs.

She said: ‘My peers and I have a relationship now where we talk about fees for a job… It’s so hard to have those discussions and be like, ‘Oh, what are you being paid for this? Does this sound about right?’

‘But with your best mates, you talk about everything else, so why is the subject of finances or how much you earn something we don’t?

‘That’s been an amazing lesson for me. And then, sharing industry advice, and supporting each other when we’re going through difficult times at work.’

Lydia also reminisced on her role in the critically acclaimed Channel 4 show It’s A Sin, which depicted the lives of a group of gay men and their friends during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the UK.

‘It was the most electric set – we had this sparkly energy while we were making it,’ she said.

‘We had no idea if it would reach a mass audience – historically queer-based shows don’t tend to do that. It came out at the perfect time in lockdown, when everyone was glued to their screens and wanting original, brilliant content.’

Lydia revealed she had become a mother during an interview with Stylist magazine published in March.

‘Life is so different now,’ she said. ‘The baby’s just sleeping on me at the moment.

‘With work, It’s A Sin changed everything career-wise for me – it was such an impactful project, in terms of my attitude to work and what I look for in roles.’
