New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern paid for a mother’s shopping in a supermarket when the woman forgot her purse.

The mother was about to buy her groceries in Auckland when she realised she had no cash or cards on her.

Ardern was behind her in the queue and stepped in to help.

Asked at press conference on Thursday why she offered to pay, Ardern said: ‘Because she was a mother.’ 

The woman had posted a thankful message on social media.

She wrote: ‘Just when you think Jacinda Ardern couldn’t get any more lovely, low key and authentic… she goes and pays for your groceries at the supermarket, because you’ve got your shopping, have two kids with you and are about to put it all back as you forgot your wallet.’

The woman told the New Zealand Herald that Ardern is ‘a leader unlike any other.’
