  • Police said that they are investigating the senseless Tuesday morning attack

A beloved family dog has been brutally stabbed and left for dead in its own backyard.

‘Buk’ – a Maltese cross Jack Russell – was found mortally wounded at his Fifth Avenue home in Dandenong in Melbourne’s south-east about 7.15am on Tuesday.

The frantic owners tried desperately to save their 11-year old pet, but were thwarted by a further act of cruelty.

When they loaded the gravely injured dog into the family car, the owners found its tyres had been slashed.

It took several hours before Buk finally received treatment from a vet, by which time he was unable to be saved and had to be euthanised.

It remains unclear whether the attack was due to a robbery gone wrong or a targeted attack on Buk.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it remained ‘early days’ in the investigation.

Detectives were expected to front the media about the senseless attack this afternoon.
