Still sporting her character Peggy’s full costume and makeup, Jaime shared a video thanking the EastEnders bosses for the chance to play the East End icon.

In the clip she said: ‘I just wrapped on playing Peggy Mitchell, just feeling extremely grateful right now to play a dear friend of mine who is no longer with us, Barbara.

‘I just want to say thank you for this opportunity, there were so many different signs that she came to me and said that I should go ahead and do this.

‘I just want to say thank you Barbara, thank you to everyone on the EastEnders team for doing something special, and highlighting issues that are happening in this day and age and in the Tory Britain that was in then and now.

‘Thank you Barbara for these opportunites, from being such a tiny teeny 2.5 size foot beautiful person to emulating such a massive heart, and I hope I did you justice.’

Quoting Peggy’s famous line, Jaime blew a kiss to the camera and added: ‘Get outta my pub! Love you.’

Captioning her post, Jaime added: ‘Thank you for all your lovely messages, I am truly honoured to play such an iconic character Peggy Mitchell, this was such a special and emotional job for me.

‘Barbara opened many doors for actresses like me and I’m eternally grateful to have known her and witness her magic, here’s to you Barbara Windsor.’

The star previously played the Carry On star, who died in December 2020, in her younger years for the BBC biopic Babs.

She said: ‘I think I’ve said this in different interviews, but it’s dead true that I had to shake the wiggle and the giggle from playing Babs. Peggy, I really drew from my personal experiences with her.

‘I was lucky to spend a bit of time with her, and sit round a piano with her, she was such a generous woman, she was such a perfectionist and such a professional.

Blast from the past! She also posted selfie's from the set of the episode, which transported viewers back to 1979 when the Mitchell family was hit by hardship

‘I got to see how she was at home, I really implemented that into Peggy. Although they didn’t have much then Peggy is proud and she really wants to protect her boys and family, but as you see in this episode the cracks really start to show.

‘I got very giggly and she turned around and said ”oh you sound like me, maybe you’ll play me one day.”

‘And said ”oh yeah maybe I will,” and it turns out I did and hopefully I do her justice, I’ve got ultimate respect and love for her and Scott.’
